The Third Beer Podcast

This week on The Third Beer podcast where men relax over beer and talk about the stuff men don’t talk about, our guest is Matthew ‘Cobber’ Collins. My co-host Chris Dickson affectionately calls his life-long friend: the Yobbo Guru.

Cobber is a humble fellow, a searcher, a traveller, and a Tibetan Buddhism appreciator. He has been a couch philosopher his whole life. I think some people are just built to think that way. Cobber would say he is by no means a guru and very much a student but I heard some sound life advice.

“At the moment, I'm on a motor bike traveling and I've spent around fifty years in search of this thing that we all hear about and talk about. There's a thousand names for it, there's a thousand different mobs saying it.”

I ask, ‘What is ‘it’?’ Cobber humbly admits he doesn’t know yet but he’ll let me know when he finds ‘it’.

“I'm definitely further from the other end of the scale. I'm better in the place that I'm in than where I was, for sure.”

“I think that's the beauty of this existence is we actually get to experience all that stuff, good and bad, to then make you go and look for ‘it’.”

ON LIMITATION

“There's a beautiful mask we're putting on, these beautiful disguises and when Chris started talking about this to me, it made so much sense, because we're all playing this game and we're not allowed to express anymore.”

“Get some Carl Jung into you if you want to understand that idea of the mask.”

ON ENLIGHTENMENT

“I've spoken to many people and they have had blown away experiences with transcendental meditation through the little mantra that they’re given.”

“Your mantra could be ‘I love me.’ I'm really working on that one. I'm not even using Tibetan or Sanskrit terms anymore. I'm just saying, ‘I love me.’”

The three of us chat further around life, happiness and spirituality in whichever form it may take. Importantly, we are blokes that are ok with talking about sensitive topics – and I’ve come a long way in a year.

What is The Third Beer Podcast?

The Third Beer is a regular Podcast hosted by Psychologist Chris Dickson and Brett McCallum. Each week they invite a special guest into the studio to talk about men’s health, mental health and general wellbeing whilst sharing a few beers. The focus is on those subjects that blokes find it hard to talk about. Brett has already shared a year-long mental health journey with the help of Chris, and although he is still a work-in-progress, Brett has seen himself become a better human being. While the chat with each week’s special guest will take place in a very informal setting and with an informal style, the conversation and topics are taken 100% seriously. Lets break down personal and world issues, one beer at a time.
