घटस्य मौनम्

विसनामके नगरे कश्चन कुम्भकारः आसीत् । कदाचित् मङ्गलगीतानि गायन्त्यः स्त्रियः तस्य आपणम् आगत्य विवाहनिमित्तं कञ्चन घटं सपादरूप्यकं दत्त्वा नीतवत्यः । किञ्चित्कालानन्तरं द्वित्राः जनाः आगत्य बन्धोः अन्त्येष्टिकर्मनिमित्तम् आवश्यकमिति यदा उक्तवन्तः तदा कुम्भकारः एकं घटं विना मूल्यम् अयच्छत् । सर्वं पश्यन् आपणे स्थितः घटः स्वजातिबान्धवयोः भिन्ना भिन्ना गतिः जाता इति समीपस्थं घटं स्वाभिप्रायम् असूचयत् । तदा सः कर्तव्यनिष्ठः घटः जीवनस्य मूल्यं कर्तव्यम् अधिकृत्य निर्धारितं भवति इति उपदिशति । कर्तव्यनिष्ठस्य घटस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा सः घटः मौनम् असेवत ।

In the city of Visanama, there was a potter. One day, women singing auspicious songs visited his shop and bought a pot for a wedding, paying a small sum. Later, a few people came seeking a pot for a funeral. The potter gave it to them for free. Observing this, a nearby pot remarked that two pots of the same kind had met entirely different fates. Another pot, wise and dutiful, explained that the value of life is determined by its purpose and duties. Hearing this, the questioning pot fell silent in realization.
