particular Sunday morning, I just had the opportunity to say, well, I'm going 00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:39.340 to go ahead and read Luke 19, just kind of get ahead of the game. 00:02:40.100 --> God's Word does for you and I. 00:06:19.340 --> 00:06:25.240 When you open up God's Word, you're going to discover either an actual question that you 00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:26.460 find in God's Word. 00:06:27.820 --> 00:06:31.660 As a staff, Bo on Tuesday has been leading us through the book of James. 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:35.860 And James gets really pointed in asking his readers questions. God's Word, Old Testament, New Testament, there are questions that are 00:06:47.920 --> 00:06:49.060 right on the page. 00:06:50.760 --> 00:06:55.440 But within God's Word, there's also those questions that arise, that come up to the top 00:06:55.440 --> 00:06:58.560 because of the Holy Spirit stirring in your life. 00:07:01.220 --> 00:07:05.040 And whether it be a parable or whether it be a story that you're reading in the Old or New 00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:07.980 Testament, God says, what about this question? 00:07:08.860 --> 00:07:10.140 What do you think about this? 00:07:12.580 --> Verse 13 goes on to say, and no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and 00:08:41.520 --> 00:08:44.400 exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account. 00:08:47.080 --> 00:08:54.020 And so, as I read Luke 19, the Lord just hit me with some questions. 00:08:54.980 --> 00:09:02.600 And in Luke 19, verses 1 through 10, a very familiar passage to you and I, the first question 00:09:02.600 --> 00:09:05.080 that the Lord hit me with is, what is my purpose? 00:09:05.940 --> 00:09:12.420 And so, our graduates and everybody here in the room and those who are watching us, what 00:09:12.420 --> 00:09:13.220 is your purpose? 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:22.880 You see, this passage is familiar because if you grew up in the church, you know, at my 00:09:22.880 --> 00:09:28.860 age, you went to Sunday school and you learned on this thing called a flannel board. 00:09:29.500 --> 00:09:36.240 It was flannel and the teacher stuck some kind of figure up on the flannel board and they taught 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:40.620 taught you what the passage of Scripture was about. 00:09:40.620 --> 00:09:48.040 Or if you're in this room and you're the age of, of like, Ben and Elizabeth and Wyatt, you 00:09:48.040 --> 00:09:50.640 might have saw it in a cartoon on a TV. 00:09:53.140 --> 00:09:54.760 It's the story of Zacchaeus. 00:09:56.060 --> 00:10:02.040 And what we read about Zacchaeus is that Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector, meaning he was 00:10:02.040 --> 00:10:03.620 over other tax collectors. 00:10:03.740 --> 00:10:08.580 And it was his responsibility to gather taxes from his own people for the Roman government. 00:10:08.700 --> 00:10:09.840 That was his task. 00:10:10.360 --> 00:10:14.460 But as many tax collectors of that time, what they did was they always skimmed a little bit. 00:10:14.540 --> 00:10:16.040 They always patted their own pocket. 00:10:16.760 --> 00:10:18.340 And Zacchaeus was one of those. 00:10:18.420 --> 00:10:20.420 And Zacchaeus was rich because of that. 00:10:21.740 --> 00:10:26.140 But Zacchaeus had heard about this man named Jesus and he knew that Jesus was coming through 00:10:26.140 --> 00:10:31.740 because Jesus was, again, as Bo shared with us last week, Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 00:10:32.640 --> 00:10:36.580 It was at this time that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem because he knew that it was a point 00:10:36.580 --> 00:10:40.300 in time for him to die on the cross and for him to raise from the dead. 00:10:41.560 --> 00:10:43.800 So he's journeying in to Jerusalem. 00:10:45.500 --> 00:10:49.220 And so Zacchaeus, one of the things about him was Zacchaeus was short. 00:10:49.960 --> 00:10:53.500 And so Zacchaeus knew, if I'm going to get a glimpse of Jesus, I've got to figure this out. 00:10:53.580 --> 00:10:55.480 And so Zacchaeus figured it out. 00:10:55.800 --> 00:10:57.300 He climbed up in a sycamore tree. 00:10:58.840 --> 00:11:02.940 And Zacchaeus got above the crowd because there was a large crowd of people following Jesus. 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:05.460 And he got up in that tree and he could see Jesus. 00:11:06.860 --> 00:11:11.460 Now, this is not part of the scripture, but I can only imagine that Zacchaeus was probably 00:11:11.460 --> 00:11:14.860 thinking, as I could see Jesus, he might have been thinking about his day too. 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.320 Well, you know, I've got to collect some more taxes today. 00:11:18.020 --> 00:11:22.180 But what Zacchaeus doesn't realize is that Jesus got a point with him. 00:11:23.060 --> 00:11:27.920 And no matter what was on his calendar, no matter what he had on his mind on the people 00:11:27.920 --> 00:11:33.000 he needed to see that day, that day was going to get interrupted because Jesus needed to see him. 00:11:34.060 --> 00:11:41.600 And so when Jesus walks by and he makes contact with Zacchaeus, Jesus calls Zacchaeus by name. 00:11:42.040 --> 00:11:42.960 I love that. 00:11:43.920 --> 00:11:46.500 He doesn't say, yo, you tax collector, come on down. 00:11:46.620 --> 00:11:48.020 You and I got to have a conversation. 00:11:48.520 --> 00:11:49.580 You got to get some things right. 00:11:49.660 --> 00:11:52.240 No, he calls Zacchaeus by name. 00:11:53.500 --> 00:11:57.620 That part of scripture right there is evidence for you and I that Jesus knows us. 00:11:58.780 --> 00:12:01.120 We're not just some random figure. 00:12:02.660 --> 00:12:03.680 Jesus knows us. 00:12:03.680 --> 00:12:09.620 When you see the accounts of Jesus that Jesus has on one-on-one, which are multitudes in the Gospels, 00:12:09.700 --> 00:12:12.040 you see how personal Jesus is. 00:12:13.280 --> 00:12:15.020 And he calls Zacchaeus by name. 00:12:15.080 --> 00:12:18.800 He says, Zacchaeus, come on down because I'm going to go to your house. 00:12:18.900 --> 00:12:21.740 Jesus basically said, hey, I'm inviting myself for supper. 00:12:22.420 --> 00:12:25.040 And so if it's all right with you, Zacchaeus, we'll go to your house. 00:12:26.340 --> 00:12:28.220 Calls him by name, goes to his house. 00:12:29.160 --> 00:12:32.300 And it's so beautiful what we see in scripture that happens. 00:12:33.640 --> 00:12:37.240 Look at Luke 19, starting at verse 8. 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:45.920 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. 00:12:48.520 --> 00:12:50.800 Zacchaeus is making a change in his life. 00:12:50.900 --> 00:12:53.020 He's making a change in the purpose of who he is. 00:12:53.600 --> 00:12:58.600 In that very moment, he's going from being a chief tax collector to all of a sudden, 00:12:58.980 --> 00:13:04.860 just in that conversation and connection with Jesus, he's now giving everything he has away. 00:13:06.580 --> 00:13:11.440 And not only that, he says, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:14.500 I restore it fourfold. 00:13:14.880 --> 00:13:16.800 I'm going to give back more than what I took. 00:13:17.320 --> 00:13:19.440 A lot of things are happening in this moment. 00:13:19.580 --> 00:13:28.000 Because again, Zacchaeus serves the Roman government and collects the things that they want him to collect. 00:13:29.080 --> 00:13:31.500 And now he's saying, I'm giving it away. 00:13:32.600 --> 00:13:35.440 It's going against what he's supposed to be about. 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:44.940 But in that moment, Jesus changes the purpose of his life just because of the encounter that Zacchaeus has with Jesus. 00:13:46.280 --> 00:13:50.180 So if you and I were to ask Zacchaeus in that moment, Zacchaeus, what is your purpose? 00:13:50.620 --> 00:13:57.540 In that moment, he would say, my purpose is to serve Jesus and to change my way of life. 00:13:59.280 --> 00:14:09.600 We go on to see in verse 9, and Jesus said to him, because of the change, today salvation has come to this house since he is also a son of Abraham. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:13.500 Salvation came to the house of Zacchaeus. 00:14:14.380 --> 00:14:17.240 Jesus recognized him as a son of Abraham. 00:14:18.460 --> 00:14:22.860 And then in verse 10, we see a purpose statement that Jesus basically gives of himself. 00:14:23.320 --> 00:14:29.880 He says, for the Son of Man, speaking of himself, for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. 00:14:31.660 --> 00:14:37.340 In the midst of his conversation with Zacchaeus in his home, he says, let me tell you why I'm here. 00:14:38.860 --> 00:14:42.580 I'm here because I came to seek and to save you, Zacchaeus. 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:47.100 I'm here because I came to seek and to save those who are lost. 00:14:47.820 --> 00:14:49.960 Those who are disconnected from me. 00:14:50.480 --> 00:14:52.120 students, seniors who are graduating as they move through college, they're processing, what am I going to do for a living? 00:15:08.680 --> 00:15:11.820 You see, our purpose is not tied to what we're going to do for a living. 00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:14.900 We think that it is. 00:15:15.700 --> 00:15:22.480 We think our purpose is tied to, if we're married, whether or not we're tied, our purpose is --> 00:15:36.820 Our identity is not about what we do or not what brings us income. 00:15:38.220 --> 00:15:41.220 Now, a person who doesn't know the Lord, they're going to have those thoughts. 00:15:53.620 Our purpose then is, God, what is it that you want from me? 00:15:55.280 --> 00:16:05.060 So if Jesus says, I came to seek and save the lost, then basically you and I as a follower, They become more than just people we casually know. 00:16:11.920 --> 00:16:27.940 They become people that we want to have an impact on, people that we want to allow God to use us to meet their needs, whatever those needs may be, because Jesus has redirected our purpose in life. 00:16:29.640 --> 00:16:37.740 That's a hard thing to come to understand sometimes, because we do wrap ourselves up on 00:18:43.080 --> 00:18:46.860 On our journey, let's take a time out because I want to share a parable with you. 00:18:46.920 --> 00:18:53.000 I want to share a story about what you can recognize in life, but yet it has that spiritual impact. 00:18:53.180 --> 00:18:54.800 It has that spiritual truth. 00:18:54.860 --> 00:18:57.400 It has that godly message in it. 00:18:58.460 --> 00:19:03.340 And so Jesus begins to tell them this story about a noble man who is about to inherit a kingdom. 00:19:04.560 --> 00:19:07.360 And this noble man had 10 servants. 00:19:07.560 --> 00:19:15.740 And before he was to leave to go handle business, he says to these 10 servants, listen, I want to give you three months wages. 00:19:16.680 --> 00:19:22.580 And what I want you to do with this three months wages
