विवेकः

कदाचित् विश्वविजयिनः सिकन्दरस्य भूरिधनस्य आवश्यकता आपतिता । तदा सः बन्धिनः उद्दिश्य 'समीपे खनिः अस्ति । यः सहस्रं नाणकानि सम्पाद्य मह्यं समर्पयति, तं दासमुक्तं करोमि' इति उक्तवान् । सर्वे अहर्निशं कार्यम् आरब्धवन्तः । एकः युवकः सहस्रं नाणकानि दत्तवान् इत्यतः भवान् मुक्तः इति यदा सिकन्दरः अवदत् तदा सः युवकः समीपे स्थितं कञ्चित् विकलाङ्गं दर्शयित्वा तस्य मोचनं करोतु इति उक्तवान् । यतः सः युवकः पुनरपि परिश्रमं कृत्वा ततः बन्धमुक्तः भवितुमर्हति किन्तु विकलाङ्गस्य तथा परिस्थितिः नास्ति इति ज्ञात्वा सिकन्दरस्य हृदयम् आर्द्रं जातम् । सः द्वौ अपि बन्धमुक्तम् अकरोत् ।

Once, Alexander the Great needed a large sum of money. He declared, "There is a nearby mine. Whoever collects and presents a thousand coins to me will be freed". All prisoners began working tirelessly. One young man successfully gathered the required amount. When Alexander granted him freedom, the young man pointed to a disabled prisoner and requested his release instead, knowing that he himself could earn his freedom again, but the disabled man could not. Moved by his compassion, Alexander freed them both.
