Outward Bound and Me

Six majors. Three Masters titles. 98 weeks as the world number one. But before all of that, there was a 14-year-old boy from Welwyn Garden City who'd never spent a night away from home, boarding a train to the Lake District for a 26-day Outward Bound course that would stay with him for life.

In our very first episode, host Dylan Carroll sits down with Sir Nick Faldo — golf legend, broadcasting icon, and proud Outward Bound alumnus — for a conversation about ambition, adventure, and the experiences that shape us. Nick reflects on his journey from a boy with a dream to the top of world golf, his passion for giving young players a chance through the Faldo Series, and why, more than 50 years on, so much of his course has never left him.

"Open your eyes, your ears, your mind — and take it all in."

Host
Dylan Carroll
Dylan Carroll is the Head of Partnerships at The Outward Bound Trust, leading the Corporate, Trusts & Foundations, Alumni and Legacy teams. Following a career in sales and marketing working across Europe, he now has 20 years fundraising leadership experience, working previously at Barnardo’s, as a consultant, and chairing the Institute of Fundraising. Dylan believes in the power of storytelling to showcase the impact an Outward Bound experience can have on individuals at a pivotal time in their lives, and how Outward Bound pedagogy has influenced countless futures, career, and life choices. He hopes that through this podcast, individual stories of resilience, failure and success, adventure and fun, will be shared with a wider audience, so that people will think on their own connection to the charity, the outdoors and nature, and possibly their own lives and autobiography, and the impact they have on others. The stories in this podcast are individual, but contribute to a collective 85 year tapestry of a charity that has had a lasting impact on many lives.
Guest
Sir Nick Faldo
Sir Nick Faldo is England's greatest ever golfer and one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport. A six-time Major champion — three Open Championships and three Masters titles — he spent years ranked number one in the world and remains one of only a handful of players ever to have achieved that level of sustained excellence. Away from the course, Nick has built a second career as one of golf's most recognisable broadcasters, spending years as lead analyst for CBS and NBC in the United States. He was knighted in 2009, and has dedicated much of his post-playing life to nurturing the next generation of golfers through the Faldo Series, a global junior golf initiative.
