Human Spectrums

Welcome to this episode of Human Spectrums, where we discuss Trans Panic. In 2023, the Canadian media and academic landscape increasingly focused on the critical issue of “Trans Panic;” a term that encapsulates the societal and political tensions surrounding transgender issues. Our podcast has the privilege to discuss with Mason Jenkins, a transgender tattoo artist and burlesque performer in the Calgary community. Covering many topics like how transitioning impacted his life, to why proper transgender representation is needed in the media, this episode sheds the light on transgender experiences in Canada in a time of  “Trans Panic.”

What is Human Spectrums?

Welcome to Human Spectrums, a podcast series produced for CMRU.ca and the Community Podcast Initiative at MRU. The Community Podcast Initiative is powered by Shaw. Human Spectrums explores how humans are on a spectrum of diverse races, orientations, and stories to tell. This seven part series explores these stories and celebrates the diversity of our society, and aims to amplify the stories of those in underrepresented groups. This series examines a broad range of stories, with each episode illuminating a different group. These are:
1. LGBTQ2S+
2. Indigenous Peoples
3. Immigrants and refugees
4. Intersectionality (where race, sexual and gender identity, disability overlap)
5. People with disabilities
6. Black people
7. Religious groups
Come take a listen to powerful discussions, moving stories, and learn about those in our society. Human Spectrums welcomes everyone to listen. We hope you enjoy.
