Show Notes

My first memory is of myself, alone on a surfboard, and I know I am going to die.

I am two years old. I have been swimming since the age of ten months, and surfing with my father for about that long, so I’m not afraid of water. However, this time is different.

My dad lets go.

I am lying on the board, and when the (very small) wave comes, he lets go. I don’t know letting go was his intention. I don’t even know he has let go until I hear his voice get further and further away.

I am looking at the shore in the distance and know I will never make it there. I scream over and over, “Save me! Save me! Save me!”

But—I don’t die. I don’t get hurt. I do yell at my dad, with a toddler’s pronunciation, “Why did you wet go! I aahmost died!” But after about five minutes, I want to go out again. And this time I tell him, “Wet me do it mysewf!”

Thirty minutes later, I am having the time of my life.
