Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Sadie. Today on the show: Chicago paying up for Jeffery Simmons, Green Bay surviving Carolina, A.J. Brown’s knee watch, and Atlanta stealing one from Cleveland. Coffee can wait. Chicago woke up and chose violence at the trade deadline. The Bears acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from Tennessee, plus a twenty twenty-eight fifth-round pick. The Titans get a twenty twenty-seven first, a twenty twenty-seven fourth, and a twenty twenty-eight first. Expensive. Aggressive. I’m into it. The Bears didn’t do this because they were bored. They did it because they think their defense can be nasty right now. Simmons is not a cute depth add. He changes the math inside. He caves in pockets. He blows up run fits. He makes quarterbacks move early. And for a Chicago team trying to win with defense and structure, that matters more than another future dart throw. The Titans side is ugly, but it’s not confusing. They’re one and six. They just moved their best defensive lineman. That’s the front office admitting this season isn’t getting fixed with vibes. For the Bears, the risk is obvious. Two first-rounders hurts if this doesn’t turn into January football. But I like the bet. Too many teams hoard picks forever, then panic when it’s time to trade them for a real problem. Chicago got the problem. On the field last night, Green Bay beat Carolina twenty-seven to nineteen. Not pretty. Not clean. Still a win. The scary part was Christian Watson leaving for a rib and chest evaluation. He went to the hospital, then returned to the field, which is a good sign. Fantasy-wise, don’t assume he’s full speed next week. Rib and chest stuff can mess with routes, catch-point work, and snap count. Watch the practice reports before treating him like normal. Carolina hung around, but that’s kind of the issue. Hanging around is not the same as making Green Bay panic. The Panthers are annoying. They’re not scary yet. Lamar Jackson was a full participant Thursday for the second straight day with that ankle issue. That’s the fantasy update you wanted. Barring a setback, he’s trending toward playing. Still check the final designation, because Lamar’s ankle is never a tiny footnote. His rushing threat is the cheat code. Seattle opened Jadarian Price’s return window from a chest injury. He was limited Thursday. That’s a stash note, not a lineup note. Deep benches, sure. But until he’s activated and we see the backfield role, he’s more handcuff lottery ticket than usable running back. My survivor pick this week is Cincinnati over Tennessee. Football reason: Tennessee is one and six and just traded Simmons. Pool reason: if you still have the Bengals, this is a clean spot. Trap warning: survivor pools were invented to make the obvious pick feel haunted. In the NBA, Atlanta beat Cleveland one fourteen to one eleven. Onyeka Okongwu went for twenty-nine and twelve, and that’s a grown-up win for the Hawks. Cleveland got twenty-four from James Harden, but the late-game defense didn’t hold up. New Orleans beat Sacramento one thirty-two to one twenty. Jeremiah Fears had twenty-two points, eight boards, and thirteen assists. Zion added twenty-two. Domantas Sabonis had fifteen rebounds and seven assists, but seven turnovers gave the Pelicans too many free runouts. The Hangover Take: the Patriots should sit A.J. Brown if that knee is still barking by Sunday. Not manage him. Not use him as a decoy. Sit him. Brown missed Thursday practice with a knee flare-up after already being limited with ankle and knee issues Wednesday. That is not a receiver you shove into a full workload just because the matchup feels big. The Patriots need him in December more than they need a compromised version against Miami. A limited A.J. Brown sounds great until he’s running half-speed routes, pulling safety help anyway, and making every target feel like a doctor’s appointment. Fantasy managers hate hearing this, but it’s better to know he’s out than get tricked by an active tag. If he plays limited, he’s volatile. If he sits, at least you can pivot before lineups lock. New England should be boring and smart here. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
