When Socrates Was An Architect

EP01 Question 1 - What Must The Architect Learn?

Show Notes

The first episode deals with the departing question for the whole series: “What must the Architect learn?”. We posed this question to four people who deal with it on a daily basis: deans and directors of studies of architecture schools. Deborah Berke (Yale, USA), Dirk Van Gameren (Delft, Holland), Christoph Lindner (Bartlett, UK) and Maarten Delbeke (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) were kind enough to share with us their possible answers.
This small Q&A radio show is based on a fictional premise: Socrates was an intern at Eupalino’s architecture office in Lisbon, back in 450 bC. Having some trouble understanding his role, he started questioning everything, eventually leading to the socratic method. The show uses this now famed method to decompose the board question of the education of the architect. I will be asking your questions to a group of interested, interesting and inspiring people. Each show, a new question.
