Show Notes

The keto diet has taken the world of diet and nutrition by storm recently. And with that has come a bunch of ways to "hack" your way into ketosis so you can (in theory) have your cake and eat it too!

One of such hacks are exogenous ketones.

So, the whole point of following a ketogenic diet is to use your body's fat reserves as energy. Basically, your liver converts your fat into energy which your cells can utilize instead of glucose. This process generates ketone bodies (simply referred to as ketones) which fuel your cells.

The problem is that most of us become carb-dependent very early on in our lives. So when we decide to transition and switch from carbs to fat for fuel, it is not a smooth transition. It usually takes time and a very strict low carb diet for us to become fat adapted. And during this period of time we might suffer of the "keto flu".

The keto flu is simply a collection of flu-like symptoms that may occur to people who are transitioning to a fat adapted metabolism. It usually resolves with a few modifications to our diets such as adding salt and drinking more water.

Unsurprisingly, many people give up the keto diet at this point and never get to experience true ketosis.

Enter exogenous ketones.

By supplementing your body with the ketones it needs while it reaches the point of ketosis by diet alone can be a very effective way of getting you fat-adapted.

The problem came when some companies decided to start marketing their exogenous ketones for weight loss and as a way for you to be able to eat all the carbs you wanted while staying in ketosis. This is not possible. Or healthy.

And to add to the mix, it turns out that not all the ketones are created equal. There's ketone salts and there's ketone esters.
