THE PUNK DRUNK LOVE – PUNK DRUNK LOVE

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight on a very cold one here in our fair city of light, and we’re ready to go all Korean punk & indie tonight to warm you up or maybe throw you in the basement, depending on how you like it. And this Friday night is thrown into the cold wind as December 17, 2021. This is Danno, ready to go from studio 2 inner sanctum at GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do?
Tonight with it being December we continue with the final local spotlight for this year with indie punk label head Jeff Moses, who along with his wife Trash Yang run World Domination, Inc based up in Seoul. They just put out a new label compilation last Friday which we’ll get a taste of in parts 3 & 4 when he joins us via phone from up in the capital. However, prior to anything happening on this show, we gotta put on the monocle and get out the scrolls for our TIGHT (or) feature, and all we gotta say is respect your elders, most especially if that elder is Papa Shin. THIS is The Drop.
________
Shin Joong Hyun – I Do Not Know
The Drop has commenced our weekly Friday feature for tonight and the weekend sets off before us. Grateful to all of you tuned in this evening, you’re what makes this thing go every night here on GFN. Danno here doing the thing as always. How’s it going this evening, Drop Gangsters? (Korean) Ready to feature some great Korean indie & punk tonight for the entirety of our two hour program, and World Domination head honcho Jeff Moses joins us in parts 3 & 4 from Seoul to showcase his label’s wares tonight. WDI just put out a new World Domination compilation last Friday, available everywhere, and the label also has a covers comp which drops late January as well.
For right now though, we had to rock a little Shin Joong Hyun to begin things this evening. If you’re talking Korean music in the modern & rock age, nobody looms larger. An innovator in psyche and rock back in the late 60’s & 70’s, that was a tune called I Do Not Know to start things.
Gotta love Shin stopping the band and telling them how to play it right, then continuing AND keeping it on the record. You also gotta love that despite threats from the government he still put out beautiful rivers and mountains, ending up in jail for it, which during the early 1970’s was no joke.
Big up to Papa Shin, Korea would be a very different place without him. Punk before that was even a thing.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
Now let’s begin warming up for our guest Jeff Moses & World Domination, Inc tonight. We’ll start with a quartet of cuts from Drinking Boys & Girls Choir to be followed by Gumiho, Jeff’s own band called …Whatever That Means, and we’ll finish with Slant. All the blah blah blahs will be covered after the ya ya yas but for now THIS is The Drop on your World Domination Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop for the final airbreak here in part 1 tonight, what’s up Drop Slops (Korean)? This is Danno, as always. Airing it out every night on GFN between 8 & 10, and tonight we’re featuring Jeff Moses of World Domination, Inc, a label he and his wife Trash Yang run up in Seoul. They’re out with a new label compilation as of last Friday named after the label, and a covers compilation drops next month called Them and Us as well, so get it and support your local talent. Now, speaking of that, we got a taste of that and will continue in that vein for the full two hours this evening, that was…
Drinking Boys & Girls Choir – Stay Here (…off the Daegu punk trio’s 2019 smasher Keep Drinking! We had them on the show while they were on tour in Canada about a year ago, and big up to them and their label Damnably, who continue to do some great stuff.)
Gumiho – Hey! You! (…this is a band that appeared courtesy of World Domination, Inc but has since broken up. We’ll talk with Jeff a bit more about them in hour 2 and hear more of their sounds then.)
…Whatever That Means – More Than Ordinary (…and speak of the devil, that was Jeff Moses and his very own band with an original called _____. Naturally we’ll hear more from and about the band from the man himself in part 3 tonight later on.)
Slant – Hunger (…this band out of Seoul put this cut out in 2019 courtesy of Iron Lung Records. This cut is just a smasher that I couldn’t avoid throwing on the playlist tonight, and if you wanna dig deeper that appears on an EP called Vain Attempt.)
Alright, so as we approach the end of part 1 tonight, we’ll play a couple of bands who we’ve seen here in Gwangju over the past couple of years. First up is Wedance with a rousing number called Ready. Really fun kind of punk dance duo to go see live, they’re hilarious. After that is our favorite who we saw rock the end of the show with Drinking Boys & Girls Choir. To finish it’s KIRARA with Wish, and that’s gonna do it for the end of the first fourth. THIS is The Drop on your Jeff & Trash Friday night.
Wedance – Ready
KIRARA – Wish

II
The Drop returns here in the 2nd quarter of tonight’s game of audio mirrors airing every night on GFN between 8 & 10. Danno here making sure everything is set just so for our World Domination Friday night, and World Domination, Inc is a label out of Seoul run by Jeff Moses & Trash Yang that we’re featuring tonight. The new World Domination compilation is out as of last Friday, so go & get that biz. To start part 2 of the show, that was ….
JAMBINAI – Time of Extinction ( …great band here more in the metal and hard rock category that formed in 2009. They’ve really made a name for themselves recently with their hard rock and traditional Korean instruments approach, making a Tiny Desk appearance as well.)
LEENALCHI – Please Don’t Go ( …another band that is obviously making a name for themselves in huge ways is this band. Their album from last year SUGUNGGA was our album of the year (and no, we weren’t just being home town on that ranking). This was their latest single from this year which is a bit more pansori rock than the usual funk & jazz approach the band had taken previously.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, more Korean cuts that are definitely a bit more in the indie category for tonight’s roster. Up next a now borderline classic from Say Sue Me performed live on Seattle’s KEXP, then we have joints from Dabda and Meaningful Stone to take us to the final verbals prior to the jump. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with World Domination, Inc.
____________
The Drop continues as we head inevitably for the jump to parts 3 & 4 this evening. Danno here, hoping you’re outta this cold tonight, cuz it is wicked snappy tonight. Tonight we’re showcasing the wares of Seoul-based indie punk label World Domination with label co-head Jeff Moses. The new World Domination comp is out as of last Friday, so go get it & show some support. AS to the recap for that last block, that was…
Say Sue Me – Old Town (Live on KEXP) (…for those unfamiliar this is a famed indie export out of Busan headed up by Choi Yumi on the vox. This tune appeared on the band’s 2018 album Here’s Where We Are, and they appear courtesy of the good people at Damnably.)
Dabda feat Takashi Kashikura – Jungle Gym (…this is a tune that appeared on a long in the creation process debut LP called But, All The Shining Things. Overall, this album is a really strong debut from this band and hopefully we’ll see more to come after this 2020 intro.)
Meaningful Stone – Dancing in the rain (…this is a tune from the artist’s expansive sophomore album called COBALT, released earlier this year. The lead singer & head of the band project is Kim Jimin, who calls herself Kim Ddutdol for stage purposes, as in kim meaningful stone.)
So, let’s get another wee taste of one of the artists we’ll hear more from later tonight. First up is Winningshot with a cut called Sunshine, then we’ll rock another joint by Smoking Goose called Struggles, and we’ll finish with THE PUNK DRUNK LOVE and a self-titled cut without the determiner. THIS is The Drop with World Domination coming up on your Friday Night with Jeff Moses.
