In episode 54 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Matt Hill, founder of the global organization One Tree Planted on using trees to revitalize our planet and create jobs around the world.

Matt Hill is the CEO and Founder of One Tree Planted, a reforestation nonprofit that was started in 2014. The company’s mission is to make it simple for people to give back to the environment. As a father and nature-lover, Matt wants to make sure future generations can enjoy the great outdoors.

One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their reforestation projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and knowledgeable experts to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. Each project focus is different, and can include forest fire restoration, agroforestry, watershed health, biodiversity, climate, and social impact. Many projects have overlapping objectives, creating a combination of benefits that contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

The nonprofit will plant one million trees in Bushfire Recovery Nurseries in Australia. One Tree Planted is teaming up with the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife on this effort that is significantly important given Australia experienced devastating fires at the end of 2019 through to 2020 which burnt 21% of temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. During an average bushfire season, only 2% is burned.

One Tree Planted is also teaming up with Sustainable Green Initiative to plant 500,000 fruit trees in India. Food scarcity across India has been amplified by the effects of COVID-19. Planting trees in the homesteads, communities, and villages will help keep hunger at bay. Over time, it will create sustainable livelihoods for small farmers, changing lives and strengthening local economies. The species they will focus on are: moringa, papaya, banana, lemon, guava, apricot, pear, peach, and jujubes.
