Internships at the Community"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":122.84,"endTime":126.35,"body":"College and I said, I'd really like to do degree at the community college"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":157.67,"endTime":161.15,"body":"and I went on some interviews at some places to"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":161.15,"endTime":164.9,"body":"do web design and development, but I ultimately ended up"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":164.9,"endTime":167.12,"body":"getting an offer from the college itself."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":167.15,"endTime":171.14,"body":"So the Office of Academic Technology at the college needed"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":171.14,"endTime":175.85,"body":"an intern to help with building online courses and doing"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":175.85,"endTime":178.79,"body":"some stuff in the LMS and doing some graphic design,"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":178.79,"endTime":181.64,"body":"just doing little odd job kind of stuff."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":182.21,"endTime":184.64,"body":"I ended up landing that one and I was working"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":184.64,"endTime":188.9,"body":"for the college itself in the Office of Academic Technology,"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":188.9,"endTime":194.99,"body":"and that ultimately morphed and turned into a contract position"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":194.99,"endTime":198.2,"body":"while I was getting my bachelor's degree as an instructional"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":198.2,"endTime":201.89,"body":"technologist was my title when I was doing that work."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":201.89,"endTime":204.62,"body":"So I moved up past the internship and actually got"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":204.62,"endTime":206.42,"body":"a contract position with them."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":207.14,"endTime":210.86,"body":"And then as I was finishing up my bachelor's degree"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":210.86,"endTime":216.89,"body":"in communication technology, I started putting my applications out and"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":216.89,"endTime":221.15,"body":"I got a job as an academic technology specialist in"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":221.15,"endTime":225.83,"body":"Columbus, Ohio, at a school called Capital University."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":225.83,"endTime":228.59,"body":"It's a small liberal arts school in central Ohio."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":229.57,"endTime":232.03,"body":"I worked there for about a decade before I left."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":232.03,"endTime":236.89,"body":"I was actually the associate director of academic technology and"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":236.89,"endTime":240.31,"body":"then which was really especially at a small place like"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":240.31,"endTime":241.65,"body":"that, it's like a catch all."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":241.66,"endTime":243.91,"body":"So I was doing instructional design, but I was also"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":243.91,"endTime":245.77,"body":"doing LMS administration."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":246.16,"endTime":248.74,"body":"I was doing a lot of different things I found,"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":248.74,"endTime":250.48,"body":"especially in small places, right?"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":250.48,"endTime":252.7,"body":"You wear a lot of different hats and you had"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":252.7,"endTime":255.58,"body":"to do a lot more as a single person then"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":255.67,"endTime":258.07,"body":"some of the bigger places that can hire more people."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":258.489,"endTime":262.54,"body":"And it wasn't until 2017, I want to say I"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":262.54,"endTime":266.26,"body":"moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and I worked at Saint"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":266.26,"endTime":268.96,"body":"Norbert College as an instructional designer, and that was the"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":268.96,"endTime":273.67,"body":"first time I technically had the title Instructional Designer, and"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":273.67,"endTime":276.01,"body":"then I had an opportunity to come back home to"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":276.01,"endTime":276.73,"body":"Michigan."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":276.78,"endTime":280.42,"body":"Michigan is where I grew up, and so I returned"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":280.42,"endTime":283.57,"body":"back home to take a job as an instructional designer"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":283.57,"endTime":285.16,"body":"at the University of Michigan, Dearborn."},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":286.73,"endTime":289.88,"body":"When somebody says to you, you're an instructional designer, what's"},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":289.88,"endTime":290.39,"body":"that?"},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":290.66,"endTime":291.62,"body":"What does that mean?"},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":291.65,"endTime":293.09,"body":"How do you answer that question?"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":293.54,"endTime":297.5,"body":"It really depends on who's asking, because I do find"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":297.5,"endTime":302.3,"body":"that instructional design is different depending on the environment that"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":302.3,"endTime":306.8,"body":"you're in and depending on the background of the person"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":306.8,"endTime":308.18,"body":"who's asking you that question."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":308.19,"endTime":310.82,"body":"So if it's somebody else in higher ed, because there's"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":310.82,"endTime":314.27,"body":"also some people in higher ed who don't necessarily know"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":314.27,"endTime":317.84,"body":"what an instructional designer is, depending if there may be"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":317.84,"endTime":321.53,"body":"more on student services side of things, or if they're"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":321.53,"endTime":324.86,"body":"not really working with academics very much and they're more"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":324.86,"endTime":327.32,"body":"on the business side, they may not know what an"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":327.32,"endTime":330.83,"body":"instructional designer is, or they may have more corporate ideas"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":330.83,"endTime":333.38,"body":"of what an instructional designer is."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":333.38,"endTime":336.65,"body":"So I often say I work with faculty to help"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":336.65,"endTime":338.27,"body":"them make their classes better."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":338.45,"endTime":341.1,"body":"That's a very standard term."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":341.12,"endTime":348.02,"body":"I'm also somewhere in the intersection of faculty development, instructional"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":348.02,"endTime":351.11,"body":"design and instructional technology."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":351.74,"endTime":355.7,"body":"So sometimes I say I help faculty use technology to"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":355.7,"endTime":358.61,"body":"make their classes better, something like that."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":359.51,"endTime":364.82,"body":"But it is difficult, I think to, it's a difficult"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":365.09,"endTime":367.36,"body":"field to explain to people."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":367.37,"endTime":370.16,"body":"So I end up giving these like really dumbed down"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":370.43,"endTime":371.57,"body":"answers."},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":372.92,"endTime":376.79,"body":"You mentioned something there that you've been at three different"},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":376.79,"endTime":379.25,"body":"places within the last little while."},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":379.28,"endTime":382.1,"body":"How would you say the different colleges that you've been"},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":382.1,"endTime":384.98,"body":"at are different or and how are they the same?"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":385.73,"endTime":388.31,"body":"None of the colleges that I've been at have been"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":388.76,"endTime":390.89,"body":"extremely large."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":391.07,"endTime":396.62,"body":"So most of my experience working in really large institutions"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":396.62,"endTime":397.97,"body":"have been as a student."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":397.97,"endTime":400.55,"body":"So I got my master's degree from the Ohio State"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":400.55,"endTime":406.94,"body":"University, and that's a huge flagship research one institution."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":406.94,"endTime":410.06,"body":"So I have that experience of being a graduate student"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":410.66,"endTime":415.64,"body":"in a large institution like that, but Capital has like"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":416.27,"endTime":417.26,"body":"the full time equivalent."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":417.26,"endTime":421.97,"body":"So for students that's something like I want to say"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":422.27,"endTime":427.43,"body":"maybe 5000 or 6000, I think St Norbert 3000, something"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":427.43,"endTime":428.0,"body":"like that."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":428.0,"endTime":431.42,"body":"So University of Michigan, Dearborn is actually the largest institution."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":431.42,"endTime":433.38,"body":"We're getting close to ten."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":433.4,"endTime":437.09,"body":"It's not quite ten, but I think it's 9000 at"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":437.09,"endTime":440.36,"body":"University of Michigan, Dearborn, if you include graduate students and"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":440.36,"endTime":441.86,"body":"some other kind of things."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":441.86,"endTime":445.43,"body":"So that is that is something that I think makes"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":445.43,"endTime":448.52,"body":"a big difference in terms of where you work."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":448.52,"endTime":451.82,"body":"The size of the institution will make a huge difference"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":451.82,"endTime":455.42,"body":"in the type of work that you do and how"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":455.42,"endTime":458.36,"body":"much you have in terms of resources, all of that."},{"speaker":"REBECCA:","startTime":458.78,"endTime":460.73,"body":"What do you when I first started at University"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":466.01,"endTime":468.59,"body":"of Michigan, Dearborn, where we were in a meeting, and"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":468.59,"endTime":471.89,"body":"I had a realization that I had done the jobs,"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":471.89,"endTime":475.76,"body":"at least not probably not to the same degree, but"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":475.94,"endTime":478.25,"body":"probably not to the same like depth."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":478.94,"endTime":481.31,"body":"But I had done it to some extent."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":481.31,"endTime":483.8,"body":"I had done the job of everybody at the table."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":483.8,"endTime":486.14,"body":"We had the LMS administrator at the table."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":486.14,"endTime":486.8,"body":"I've done that."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":486.8,"endTime":487.67,"body":"I've been there."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":487.67,"endTime":490.31,"body":"Like that was my sole job for a little while."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":490.46,"endTime":492.98,"body":"We had several other instructional designers."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":492.98,"endTime":495.95,"body":"We had I think there was like maybe there was"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":495.95,"endTime":498.95,"body":"somebody like a provost at the table who like maybe"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":498.95,"endTime":499.91,"body":"an associate provost."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":499.91,"endTime":501.58,"body":"I was like, okay, I haven't done that."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":501.58,"endTime":503.84,"body":"But when I was at Capitol for a while, I"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":503.84,"endTime":505.64,"body":"was the only person in the center."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":505.97,"endTime":508.22,"body":"And so I was doing the budget."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":508.22,"endTime":511.22,"body":"I was doing a lot of the designers before."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":515.84,"endTime":519.68,"body":"I think that the size of the institution is support you hiring"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":526.64,"endTime":530.84,"body":"a staff, for instance, that's something that you might pandemic."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":585.14,"endTime":587.56,"body":"Now, prior to the pandemic, I would go when I"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":587.56,"endTime":588.31,"body":"was needed."},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":588.31,"endTime":590.89,"body":"And because there were so many more people, I would"},{"speaker":"AUTUMM:","startTime":590.89,"endTime":592.15,"body":"end up
