NOTE


Between 1798 and 1799 Boccherini transcribes and gathers twelve quintets in two collections, originally composed for different ensembles, entrusting them to a rather unusual instrumental formation: to the classical string quartet (made up of two violins, viola and cello) the composer adds the guitar. The choice of the instrument is a tribute to the client and dedicatee of the two collections, the Marquis of Benavente. An excellent amateur guitarist and sincere admirer of Boccherini, the Madrid patron hosts a permanent orchestra in his palace, frequented by intellectuals, musicians and painters (among which the name of Goya, a close friend of Boccherini, stands out); it was to the Italian that the Marquis had entrusted the role of music director.
