Majestic and slow Variations I - XII "The retreat from Madrid" Narciso Yepes, guitar Melos Quartet NOTE Between 1798 and 1799 Boccherini transcribes and gathers twelve quintets in two collections, originally composed for different ensembles, entrusting them to a rather unusual instrumental formation: to the classical string quartet (made up of two violins, viola and cello) the composer adds the guitar. The choice of the instrument is a tribute to the client and dedicatee of the two collections, the Marquis of Benavente. An excellent amateur guitarist and sincere admirer of Boccherini, the Madrid patron hosts a permanent orchestra in his palace, frequented by intellectuals, musicians and painters (among which the name of Goya, a close friend of Boccherini, stands out); it was to the Italian that the Marquis had entrusted the role of music director.
