was working with strategic partners to create education and"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":158.81,"endTime":161.45,"body":"employment opportunities for youth in the city."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":161.48,"endTime":163.12,"body":"I found myself in my zone."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":163.16,"endTime":166.1,"body":"I was loving it and I didn't realize it, at"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":166.1,"endTime":167.96,"body":"least not immediately."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":167.96,"endTime":170.66,"body":"But the environment that I was in was filled with"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":170.66,"endTime":175.04,"body":"so much energy that was focused on building solutions through"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":175.04,"endTime":179.84,"body":"community based organizations and education institutions that was preparing young"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":179.84,"endTime":181.25,"body":"people for their careers."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":181.28,"endTime":184.97,"body":"It was, in essence, where I now consider my stomping"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":184.97,"endTime":188.0,"body":"grounds in which I honed my skills as an instructional"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":188.0,"endTime":191.33,"body":"designer, even though, let's remember at this point, I still"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":191.33,"endTime":194.15,"body":"had not seen or heard of instructional design, didn't know"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":194.15,"endTime":194.76,"body":"what it was."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":194.78,"endTime":197.84,"body":"At that time, I was just a project manager."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":198.26,"endTime":201.8,"body":"I had this caseload of 12 different youth programs that"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":201.8,"endTime":205.46,"body":"I was responsible for monitoring and reporting and managing the"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":205.46,"endTime":208.42,"body":"grants awarded through these different federal programs."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":208.43,"endTime":212.78,"body":"And my job was to go to these organizations and"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":212.78,"endTime":217.55,"body":"to start conducting basically needs analysis, making sure that they"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":217.55,"endTime":219.86,"body":"were using the funding for what it was supposed to"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":219.86,"endTime":220.13,"body":"be."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":220.16,"endTime":224.03,"body":"And Philadelphia, it's my hometown, and many of the programs"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":224.03,"endTime":228.56,"body":"that were assigned to my caseload were implemented by organizations"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":228.56,"endTime":230.91,"body":"or institutions that served me."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":230.93,"endTime":233.66,"body":"As I was growing up through my formative years."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":233.66,"endTime":235.43,"body":"And so I saw it as my way to give"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":235.43,"endTime":235.79,"body":"back."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":235.94,"endTime":238.34,"body":"So I asked questions to the staff, to the program"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":238.34,"endTime":241.49,"body":"participants, to the parents, to the program administrators."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":241.55,"endTime":244.37,"body":"Really went beyond the level of asking questions in which"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":244.37,"endTime":246.88,"body":"were required for me as a project manager."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":246.88,"endTime":247.13,"body":"Right."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":247.19,"endTime":249.02,"body":"And I was only supposed to go there and answer"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":249.02,"endTime":252.08,"body":"these questions, check off some things on a report and"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":252.08,"endTime":254.4,"body":"then go back and say, yes, they're doing the job."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":254.46,"endTime":255.8,"body":"No, they're not doing the job."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":255.8,"endTime":259.19,"body":"But I found myself asking these conversations and talking to"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":259.19,"endTime":263.33,"body":"different people, finding about their experiences, which revealed different problems"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":263.33,"endTime":266.78,"body":"and gaps and obviously lots of opportunities for improvement that"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":266.78,"endTime":270.75,"body":"these programs could address to better serve their program participants."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":270.77,"endTime":273.62,"body":"I was consulting, I was identifying a problem."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":273.62,"endTime":278.24,"body":"I was recommending solutions and organizing meetings to socialize, change,"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":278.24,"endTime":281.66,"body":"and I was doing all this stuff, not realizing that"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":281.66,"endTime":282.32,"body":"again."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":282.5,"endTime":285.17,"body":"Now I know that these were the beginning stages of"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":285.17,"endTime":287.66,"body":"what we know as the ADDIE methodology."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":287.81,"endTime":289.37,"body":"I wasn't an instructional designer."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":289.37,"endTime":291.59,"body":"I was a project manager and wasn't tasked to go"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":291.59,"endTime":293.17,"body":"there and conduct an analysis."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":293.18,"endTime":295.1,"body":"I was just tasked to go there to find out"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":295.1,"endTime":297.41,"body":"if they were using the funding for the way that"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":297.41,"endTime":299.01,"body":"they were supposed to be using it for."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":299.03,"endTime":302.66,"body":"But here I am in this organization going to these"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":302.66,"endTime":307.85,"body":"different programs and I'm having these conversations and implementing this"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":307.85,"endTime":311.54,"body":"process for my caseload of programs resulted in a lot"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":311.54,"endTime":315.05,"body":"of them receiving funding for the additional recurring years."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":315.05,"endTime":318.95,"body":"And that's because after these conversations, I would design workshops,"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":318.95,"endTime":322.1,"body":"I would design meetings for us to talk through them"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":322.1,"endTime":324.62,"body":"and come up with processes and procedures for them to"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":324.62,"endTime":325.22,"body":"improve on."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":325.22,"endTime":327.77,"body":"And so my peers and colleagues, they were asking, how"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":327.77,"endTime":329.99,"body":"are you getting these results with your programs?"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":330.14,"endTime":331.49,"body":"How are all your programs?"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":331.49,"endTime":334.73,"body":"A high number of them, they're getting refunding for recurring"},{"speaker":"Speaker 1","startTime":334.73,"endTime":335.18,"body":"years."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":335.18,"endTime":338.0,"body":"And so when I shared with my supervisor what I"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":338.0,"endTime":340.79,"body":"was doing, she didn't ask me to lead the team"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":340.79,"endTime":341.99,"body":"through my process."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":341.99,"endTime":345.74,"body":"And there I was again, Rebecca at the beginning stages"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":346.07,"endTime":348.53,"body":"of sharing, okay, this is what I did."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":348.53,"endTime":349.79,"body":"This is how I did it."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":349.79,"endTime":352.33,"body":"And again, this is instructional design, right?"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":352.34,"endTime":355.88,"body":"Not realizing that process I was walking through was again"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":355.88,"endTime":357.2,"body":"the ADDIE process."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":357.2,"endTime":360.32,"body":"I was analyzing these, designing the learning, developing a solution"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":360.32,"endTime":363.5,"body":"to implementing a strategy so the evaluation of all of"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":363.5,"endTime":367.4,"body":"this comes out in such an organic way because it"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":367.4,"endTime":371.62,"body":"was visible, by the way, that the programs were performing."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":372.02,"endTime":376.01,"body":"It was if they got funding again, then that process"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":376.01,"endTime":376.46,"body":"worked."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":376.46,"endTime":380.0,"body":"And for my colleagues in which I shared my process"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":380.0,"endTime":382.88,"body":"with it simply showed them, Well, okay, let's see how"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":382.88,"endTime":386.15,"body":"many of your programs are going to receive refunding for"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":386.15,"endTime":389.0,"body":"the following years now that you too are going out"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":389.0,"endTime":391.67,"body":"to those sites and you are taking them through this"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":391.67,"endTime":392.34,"body":"process?"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":392.36,"endTime":395.69,"body":"After that, I just looked for other opportunities that were"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":395.69,"endTime":400.67,"body":"associated to going into organizations and solving problems through learning."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":400.67,"endTime":404.09,"body":"And eventually I did stumble across, hey, you should be"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":404.09,"endTime":405.74,"body":"an instructional designer."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":405.77,"endTime":406.73,"body":"What is that?"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":406.88,"endTime":408.71,"body":"Oh, let me tell you."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":409.63,"endTime":413.71,"body":"And I was working for a consulting company in Newtown,"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":413.71,"endTime":418.21,"body":"Pennsylvania, that was basically sending out training programs, reading training"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":418.21,"endTime":420.07,"body":"programs for pharmaceutical companies."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":420.34,"endTime":423.49,"body":"My background wasn't in any type of pharmaceuticals I had"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":423.49,"endTime":426.79,"body":"no knowledge of, and I have no degrees in anything"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":426.79,"endTime":428.44,"body":"related to pharmaceuticals."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":428.44,"endTime":432.05,"body":"But there I was using this process of going into"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":432.05,"endTime":436.24,"body":"an organization, asking questions, seeing what the problems are, identifying"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":436.24,"endTime":439.72,"body":"the processes and procedures to design, learning around it."},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":440.08,"endTime":442.99,"body":"And from there, the rest is I just pursued other"},{"speaker":"Yorel Stephens","startTime":442.99,"endTime":446.53,"body":"opportunities after that, looking for other opportunities to go
