The Word On The Street

Lights stop us from stumbling, lights shine the way, lights expose good and bad deeds. And we have a God who is light. He is all that is good and holy and wonderful!

Show Notes

What is light? What is darkness? How important is light? What are ways people have created light in the darkness over history? If we don’t have light, what do we have? Are you afraid of the dark?

I love camping, but my kids don’t like the dark, well, they didn’t when they were younger. Why not?

We ended up taking glow sticks with us so that they would light up the camper throughout the night, so whenever they woke up, they would not be scared.

Why are we prone to being scared in the dark in the same place that we are fine with in the light? Because we can’t see properly, we can’t be sure it’s safe, sneaky stuff happens at night.

What do you think?

I am constantly impressed by God when I think of him making the sun.

Fun facts about the sun:
  • Many ancient cultures worshiped the sun as a deity
  • Its temperature is approximately between 5500 and 6000 degrees Celsius
  • The sun produces energy that supports all life on earth through a process known as photosynthesis
  • Its gravity is 28 times stronger than earth’s gravity
  • Light from the sun takes eight minutes and twenty seconds to reach the earth
  • You can fit 1.3 million earths into it
  • The sun is actually a mixture of ALL colours, which appears to the eye as white
  • The sun is the closest thing to a perfect sphere that has been observed in nature
God is not A light - the sun, a torch, a light bulb, LEDs, a candle, fire. He IS light.

Bible Passage: 1 John 1:5-7
“Jesus told us that God is light and doesn’t have any darkness in him. Now we are telling you. If we say that we share in life with God and keep on living in the dark, we are lying and are not living by the truth. But if we live in the light, as God does, we share in life with each other.”

Light represents what is good, true and holy. Light is exposed. It hides nothing like darkness does.

Bible Passage: Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp that gives light wherever I walk.”

Light helps us not to stumble as we travel along. It shows us the way. God is like that - he shows us how to live our lives without tripping up.

Story Time!

Camp Ichthus Lantern Stalk fun!

It was hard to see the leaders hiding in the dark, but when they shone their torches on the kids they had spotted, it gave away their hiding spot and lit up the area for us all.

It was harder to be sneaky when we were close to the lantern because of the light that it was giving off. This meant it was almost impossible to win. I actually do not remember getting the lantern in all the years that I played.

If we believe in God we have the Holy Spirit living in us, and we are the light too!

Many of the people featured in the stained glass windows in churches around the world show a halo of light around their heads. This shows the light of the holy spirit, showing them to be holy. I think the artists may have been reading Matthew 5, and wanted to draw the light coming out of these people.

Bible Passage: Matthew 5:14-16
"You are like light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, and no one would light a lamp and put it under a clay pot. A lamp is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house.Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.”

A light is public, on display for all to see.

Question Time!
  • In what ways can you see that God is like light?
  • Do you want to be like light too? How can you make that happen?
