Loverboy === Katie Marinello: [00:00:00] Hello and welcome to Carrie'd Far, far Away, a podcast where we are watching and reading everything that Carrie Fisher did in her short life and story career. I'm Katie Marinello Claire Fisher: I'm Claire Fisher, Katie Marinello: and today we are recapping Loverboy Claire Fisher: the 1989 version, because turns out there's more than one movie named Lover Katie Marinello: Yeah. Common, common phrase. It's also a novelty, hard iced tea company run by some Bravo-lebrities. Claire Fisher: Novelty. Hard iced tea, you say. Katie Marinello: Yeah, it's all right. I don't really like iced tea, but I like their orange chai. Claire Fisher: Well, Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Um, this is, , the Lover Boy that was released April 28th, 1989. The number one movie in America was Pet Cemetery. Have you ever seen Katie Marinello: I haven't, but I've obviously heard of it. It's definitely, actually, I just met a cat on Sunday whose name was Church, and that is the name of the cat from Pet Cemetery. Claire Fisher: I Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Okay. Katie Marinello: It's [00:01:00] short for Winston Churchill. The cat's name is Winston Churchill and they call him Church. Claire Fisher: okay. Well, when this was released, Rainman was in its 17th week in theaters and had already won best picture Katie Marinello: Oh my God. Claire Fisher: because it was released in December and it was still in theaters in April. And I mean, man, remember long theatrical Katie Marinello: that crazy? Like I know that now they do tend to release things on streaming before they're out of theaters because nobody goes to the theater anymore. But I remember learning that like Titanic was the first one where they released it on VHS while it was still in theaters and just thinking like, wow, what a thing that we just like don't do anymore like that. It would still be in theaters when it won best picture is just mind blowing. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Putting us into the context here, I rounded up some non pop culture news because 1989 turned out to be a real watershed year for global politics in a couple of Katie Marinello: Yeah. First of all, I was born in 88, end of, I [00:02:00] was born 10 days before 89, so I kind of consider that my first year, so I was born. That's good. Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: The US had a savings and loan scandal. Katie Marinello: Oh, Claire Fisher: Yeah. Which, caused, the failure of the savings and loan, Katie Marinello: I was gonna say, we don't have a savings loan anymore. Really? Yeah. Claire Fisher: Right. Which is why it's so hard for people to understand the plot of It's a Katie Marinello: Wonderful Life. Claire Fisher: The Soviet Union held its first contested elections in March, which led to losses for the Communist Party. On April 19th, a woman jogging in Central Park was assaulted leading to the wrongful convictions of five, men of color. And, she was not identified by name until many years later. I think we should also stick with, the journalistic, tradition of not naming victims unless, you can't avoid it and. As of the day this movie is released, the protests Tiananmen Square were entering their second week of an eventual seven weeks that there were protests ongoing before the infamous [00:03:00] massacre. So 1989 was already warming up to be quite the hectic year by April. And, you will recall that dad and one of his coworkers were watching the Tiananmen Square protests on TV and decided to bet on whether the Berlin Wall would be coming down next - a bet, which dad lost. Dad still refers to November 9th as Bob Hallinan Enrichment Day because he had to pay up. Katie Marinello: Okay. Sounds like by April of 1989 enough had happened that it was kinda like the first couple months of 2026. Just a lot going on and into that comes a movie that I actually don't think taps into too much of that social commentary. Claire Fisher: is not interested in contemporary issues Katie Marinello: Not really. No. It's like, Claire Fisher: Not even what could be a fairly obvious one of the ongoing hiv aids Katie Marinello: right, right. Claire Fisher: the plot of this Katie Marinello: Good point. Well, speaking of the plot of this movie, why don't you go ahead and tell us what it [00:04:00] is. Claire Fisher: Carrie Fisher plays Monica Delancey, a Katie Marinello: woman of average Claire Fisher: fitness who's married to a former Mr. California bodybuilder. Her husband Claude, does personal training for extreme fitness nuts, so she feels like she can't measure up. She hires a pizza delivery man slash gigolo Randy, who bonds with her over her love of photography. But when Claude suspects the affair, he joins forces with other jealous husbands who's wives have been ordering quote unquote, extra anchovies from Senor Pizza to track Randy down. After many misunderstandings, the jealous husbands caused property damage at Randy's parents' anniversary party and get arrested in a post credited stinger. Monica bails Claude out of jail, and they forget the whole thing. Katie Marinello: Yeah, Claire Fisher: Yeah, that's it from Katie Marinello: that's it from Carrie Fisher. Yep. Mm-hmm. So let's talk, let's talk about, I guess, everyone else in this movie as we go along. Claire Fisher: are so Katie Marinello: So many people in this movie. Claire Fisher: so many named characters. I was having trouble keeping track and then they all turned out to be relevant to the resolution, which is[00:05:00] Katie Marinello: It is, it is true that they do bring it together pretty well. So this movie is not about Carrie Fisher. Claire Fisher: No, our star is Katie Marinello: Patrick Dempsey, Claire Fisher: Lil Baby Katie Marinello: a little baby temp Patrick Dempsey. So I actually can't, like, still can't wrap my head around the fact that that's him because he does not look like McDreamy. His is a face that definitely got better with age. Claire Fisher: he was only 22 when they filmed this in 1988. He would come to more, of our attention, around 2004 ish. Correct. When Grey's Anatomy hit the airwaves. Katie Marinello: who knows? But he was everything Claire Fisher: later. Katie Marinello: you know, like 10 years and he is still around obviously. He makes occasional flashback guest star roles on Grey's Anatomy. Still on good terms with Shonda and all that good stuff, but, obviously was killed off infamously, , in a car crash after surviving several of the deadly incidents that happened to their hospital over the [00:06:00] years. Claire Fisher: Well, since you clearly care deeply about Grey's Anatomy, would you like to summarize for anyone listening who wasn't really up on this, why is he McDreamy and what was the significance of that terminology in the mid Katie Marinello: oh my, um, why was he McDreamy? Honestly, I, he just was, I mean, we don't really need to go into the plot of Grey's Anatomy, but he's the main love interest for the main character, and I guess McDreamy comes from McDonald's. I'm not sure. You tell me no idea. Claire Fisher: I, Hey, I, my first exposure to Grey's Anatomy was watching it in a feminist media criticism course that I took at, uh, summer camp one year Katie Marinello: Yeah, I honestly, I would have to look up like how it came to be. I'm pretty sure it was, uh, Sandra O's character who comes up with it. Clip from Grey's Anatomy: I kissed Eric, you kissed Eric in the elevator. Oh, you kissed him in the elevator. I was having a bad day. I am having a bad day. [00:07:00] So what'd you do on your bad days? Make out with Dr. McDreamy Katie Marinello: And then, when Eric Dane joins the show, who just passed away, another one of those weird little, coincidences with what we're talking about, uh, when he joined the show, then they're trying to figure out how to, make him. A nickname as well and they kind of come up with a couple and then they go, no, MC Steamy. But yeah, I told you this yesterday. I need to see a face progression because I do not believe this is Patrick Dempsey I knew it was him. I saw it in the opening credits. I saw it in the ending credits. I still don't believe it. Claire Fisher: Well, um, the years were transformative, Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: He made something like three rom-coms in 1988 Katie Marinello: Wow. Claire Fisher: his agent was trying, really trying to make him happen as a romantic leaning Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Then in the nineties, that didn't work out so great, but, you know, hey, he came back in, the aughts to be McDreamy, Katie Marinello: And then did Enchanted where [00:08:00] he got to be like a literal Claire Fisher: Disney prince Katie Marinello: Yeah, exactly. Ultimately. Claire Fisher: Yeah. So I mean, he, he grew into himself. Katie Marinello: Oh yeah. Claire Fisher: Okay, so the most notable main character is Patrick Katie Marinello: Yes. Claire Fisher: but they got a lot of people who would've been pretty big Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: the time. In fact, it's noted in the trivia for this production that, Kirstiee Allie who was then the star Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Was only available to make a, a brief appearance because she was actively filming Cheers Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And Carrie Fisher similarly only makes a couple of brief appearances because she was actually in between filming The Burbs and filming When Harry Met Sally Katie Marinello: Oh, shit. Claire Fisher: So they were having some busy years, but I think, you know, when you think about how this movie got to be made, part of the joke that probably would've made more sense in 1988. Part of the joke is that he's some nobody and he's got all these women who, who the audience would've Katie Marinello: Right? [00:09:00] Absolutely. Claire Fisher: Calling him up for Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: Um, Katie Marinello: let's talk about how this man gets into this, line of work, shall we? So he is a college student. And it is the day before summer break and all his friends come over to party in his dorm room. Is there anything more relatable than the number of people they tried to get into that teeny tiny dorm room? I was so happy because a lot of the time on, tv, like they make dorm rooms look gorgeous. Right. Claire Fisher: No. Katie Marinello: like, I had some really pretty dorm rooms, but that like , getting 50 people into a forced double I felt was very realistic. Anyway, so, but he was supposed to spend the night with his girlfriend. She gets mad at him. Claire Fisher: and it's her, her room too Katie Marinello: Right. They live together. Claire Fisher: right. Katie Marinello: Yeah. So the fact that he's allowing people to party in their shared bedroom Claire Fisher: Mm-hmm. Katie Marinello: uh, yeah. Claire Fisher: [00:10:00] So she makes him sleep in the Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So her name is Jenny and who plays her? Katie Marinello: Nancy Vallen, who is widely known for her recurring role on Baywatch. And she also appeared on several popular TV shows in that Baywatch era, including Saved by the Bell and Miami Vice I feel like she may be rang a bell for me from Saved by the Bell. I'm not sure who she played, but I did kind of recognize her. So Jenny is mad at him because he won't tell his family that she even exists, let alone that they are living together. Claire Fisher: So Katie Marinello: there's Claire Fisher: one thing more relatable than, how many people shoved into that dorm room, which is that he is not really doing that great at college Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and he doesn't know why not Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: He thinks that if he tells his parents he has a full-time girlfriend, she's Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: for his academic, , underperformance, right? Katie Marinello: I mean, how many of us wanna tell our parents about our sex life? Like living in the same room [00:11:00] implies that there's a sexual relationship and I mean, you've been married for six years and are having a baby and you don't wanna talk to your parents about it. Claire Fisher: I don't have to talk to them. , After they find out I'm pregnant, they'll say things like, oh, you know, they know that, what causes that now? Katie Marinello: No. Did they really? Claire Fisher: That's what our father said when I told him I was Katie Marinello: Geez Louise. Okay. Wow. It's like he's reading out of a Boomer handbook anyway. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Katie Marinello: Um Claire Fisher: Speaking of Boomers Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Randy is a boomer and his parents are a Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Right. Um, and they really, really, really want him to be the first person in. The family to go to college Katie Marinello: Well, his mother does. Claire Fisher: So there's, a generation gap here. No. Both his mother and his father want that, but his father's sick of paying if he's gonna come home with incompletes and Fs and Ds Katie Marinello: Right. Claire Fisher: never declare a major, which, hey, took us a while to figure out what we wanted to do in Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. , Katie Marinello: I still joke about it because, I mean, I don't write poetry for a living, but [00:12:00] I was never going to write poetry for a living. Um, yeah, Right for a I know. Exactly, exactly. It's all worked out. But, and then there's also, oh, I was gonna say maybe the third most relatable thing about these first 10 minutes of the movie is hiding your girlfriend from your parents. 'cause I went through that in college. And we weren't living together. Just, he didn't wanna even tell them that he had a girlfriend, so, Claire Fisher: Mm-hmm. So at this point Jenny's pretty mad Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: They moved out of their dorm in such a hurry that he ended up with one of her suitcases, Katie Marinello: Right. Well, he promises her that as soon as his dad gets there, he's gonna introduce her and then he doesn't. Claire Fisher: he doesn't, Katie Marinello: So she storms off. And his dad picks up her suitcase and they go home. And then there's this big blowout over his grades. Claire Fisher: and his father threatens to cut him off and he says, fine, I'll just go to work Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And he goes to Senor Pizza, starts delivering [00:13:00] pizzas for $4 and 80 cents an Katie Marinello: It's such a Claire Fisher: Um, Katie Marinello: awful, they have to wear mustaches that they stick into their nostrils, Claire Fisher: do you wanna know how much $4 and 80 cents an hour would be Katie Marinello: of course. Claire Fisher: $12.59. Katie Marinello: Oh, Claire Fisher: actually higher than Katie Marinello: it's more, yeah. Almost twice the current federal minimum wage. Yeah. But. Claire Fisher: And yet, despite He finds time to complain. Randy (Patrick Dempsey): Four 80 an hour. Know people who swim here from Mexico make more than that. Sal (Bernie Coulson): Yeah. Well we pay Juan. Five 10 'cause he's. Got more experience. You Katie Marinello: I loved that. That's the closest they came to maybe a political statement there. Claire Fisher: But this is a problem because he needs to earn $9,000 by September in order to pay his own Katie Marinello: What would $9,000 be in today's money Clairebear?. Claire Fisher: I'm so glad you asked. It would be $23,607. Katie Marinello: Okay. That's not so far off, I guess, from what it would cost to go to college now.[00:14:00] Claire Fisher: If they were going to like a Yeah. Public school, Katie Marinello: Yeah, like a state school and. I mean, I don't know if you lived at home, didn't have like the room and board stuff on top of it, maybe you could go get a semester for $23,000, but you could not make $23,000 in a summer. Claire Fisher: No. So his coworker, Sal, who plays Sal. Katie Marinello: Bernie Colson, who is known for his roles as the thinker on the X-Files and micro rearden in Intelligence and is the drummer, of a reuniting punk band in the Canadian Mockumentary Hardcore Logo. Claire Fisher: Okay. So Sal does the math and he says, there's no Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: cannot earn $9,000 Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: But then Randy gets sent out to make a delivery and a woman is sort of giving him the eye eye at a crosswalk So he pulls over and follows her into a store, tries to ask her out, uh, she says, oh, you're just a boy. I don't date boys. And Katie Marinello: [00:15:00] She is the only rational middle-aged woman in this entire movie because yeah, he, it's not just that he is a boy, it's, I mean, you look at his face, he like has such a baby face and, um, yeah. So they're overheard by, Alex, right, whose full name is Alex Burnett, who's played by Barbara Carrera, best known for playing the bond villainess Fatima Blush, in Never Say Never Again. And on Dallas as the mysterious Angela Nero. So she overhears him hitting on this woman and being rejected. And she says, oh, that was really a brave thing that you did. And she starts to buy him clothes, Claire Fisher: Well, she says, I've never met a man who would shy away from a 20-year-old girl Katie Marinello: which is true. Claire Fisher: Yeah. And so she's gonna ask him out. So she offers him, a coat that would be more flattering on him. She offers to take him out for cappuccino. Then he sees they're ticketing, his delivery van. He Katie Marinello: Yeah, he is like, oh shoot, I have more deliveries to [00:16:00] do. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Which he's kicking himself for later. He says, I had a letter to Penthouse staring me right in the face. I had to let it go. But the next day, Alex orders pizza with extra anchovies from Senor Pizza, asks for Randy by name, and then arranges for his next delivery after her to be like a really big delivery that's kind of far away from the store, so that when he gets to her hotel room, she can keep him there for a while without anyone getting suspicious Katie Marinello: Apparently overnight he doesn't have to bring the the truck back ' cause he calls his dad and says he is gonna stay out. Claire Fisher: yeah, he's gonna sleep over at a friend's house and she's licking champagne off his shoulders Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: that conversation with his, father the father and the mother briefly have an argument over whether he should get one last chance for them to pay his Katie Marinello: Yeah. His father's like, oh, Randy's not coming home and tries to get something started with her. And she's not speaking to him. Because of the fight that they have. Clearly, it's been an ongoing fight since he brought his grades [00:17:00] home. Claire Fisher: So the next day Sal is saying Sal (Bernie Coulson): Seven times. Yeah. Oh man. That is like wild boars or something. Randy (Patrick Dempsey): Oh, well, I mean that wasn't all we did. We, we talked about stuff. Sal (Bernie Coulson): Yeah. Right. Katie Marinello: And Randy's not able to walk. Yeah. Claire Fisher: Yeah. And Alex actually sends a fancy outfit to be delivered to the restaurant Katie Marinello: The coat that he had been trying on before. Right Claire Fisher: but he's not there. So Tony, who also works at this restaurant, they say is an Italian exchange student, but exchange students can't work in the US so there must be something else going on. Um, Katie Marinello: the table. Claire Fisher: Tony brings it by his house. and he has a girlfriend in the car and he says, offhandedly, these American women always say yes. But. Here's where the shenanigans begin because Sal is calling Randy's house to say, Hey, there's a woman asking for you by name. She wants extra anchovies. [00:18:00] Meanwhile, Randy's father, Joe, has taken the coat and he finds a love note in the pocket that's only signed Katie Marinello: Alex. Yeah. So there's a handsome man who's shown up with the coat, he said he was at a guy's friend's house the night before, and it's signed Alex, he comes to the quote unquote logical conclusion that his. Son is a gay man, which he does not say. Gay man. Claire Fisher: no, he says Joe (Robert Ginty): Diane, our son is a fruit. Claire Fisher: But meanwhile, the woman who wanted the extra anchovies is just Alex Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: to take him out again. So she keeps ordering more pizza and he says, well, listen, I got a girlfriend back at school. And he, she says, it's okay. Katie Marinello: He says, I'm not in love with you. And she's like, you're not? Claire Fisher: but she says, it's okay. She's only in town a few Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and they sleep together again. And then she gives him $200 and says it's for his scholarship Katie Marinello: And he says, no, I can't. I can't take that. She said, listen, if you had money and I needed money, [00:19:00] would you give me money? Of course you would. So it's fine. Claire Fisher: Mm-hmm. Katie Marinello: Claire, how much is $200 in today's money? Claire Fisher: It's $524 and 60 cents. So Katie Marinello: Oh, Claire Fisher: not Katie Marinello: that's what most of my clients pay me in a month, Claire Fisher: Yeah. Right. we're in the wrong line of Katie Marinello: clearly. Claire Fisher: So as Alex is leaving to go back to Rome, which is apparently her Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: when she's not, managing her international chain of Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: She says, be on the lookout for extra anchovies Katie Marinello: Yes. Claire Fisher: But meanwhile, back at the house, his father is searching his room and finds Jenny's suitcase with women's underwear in Katie Marinello: And as we know in 1989, being gay and being a cross dresser are the same thing, and also being trans, which they usually don't specify. Claire Fisher: Well, and also all these things were still to an extent considered mental Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: issues. For example, look at Silence of the Lambs for Katie Marinello: Right. And the things that his father says, like, Ugh, you always think it's gonna happen to someone [00:20:00] else, are just. Depressing. But his mother does say, our son's sex life is none of our business, which is really quite progressive. Claire Fisher: Yeah. And you know, this is where I kind of thought if you were gonna mention the elephant in the room Katie Marinello: Mm. Claire Fisher: in 1989, if you're talking about homosexuality and sleeping around and all that, wouldn't you bring up AIDS. Katie Marinello: Right, right, Claire Fisher: but that's not the tone they were going for in Katie Marinello: right. It would bring down the shenanigans. Right. Bring down the mood of the shenanigans. Claire Fisher: Well, speaking of things that bring down the mood, the next woman to order extra anchovies and ask for Randy is, Kyoko Katie Marinello: Bruckner Claire Fisher: who, says her American husband treats her like a geisha girl. Her 14 year marriage has been a mistake. They bring up racialized Katie Marinello: spousal Claire Fisher: abuse in this movie, and they don't bring up STDs. Katie Marinello: So Kyoko is played by Kim Maori, an American actress, best known for the role of Dr. Wendy Armstrong, in the first two seasons of St. Elsewhere. And [00:21:00] she's also appeared on Babylon Five, Murder, She Wrote, Magnum pi, JAG 24, et cetera. Yeah, this is in, this is an interesting relationship and I feel like we get a lot about it from a very small piece of the movie. Right. So yeah. So he thinks he's going to see Alex again. He ends up seeing someone else. He's like, how did you get my number? And she's like, Claire Fisher: Oh, I'm a Katie Marinello: yeah. Friend of Alex. So if he comes clear that this number is being passed around, right. I. Claire Fisher: Yeah. In fact, his boss compliments him, wow, you must be really good delivering pizza. Sal (Bernie Coulson): You got five more calls. Oh, all women. All extra anchovies. Four of 'em. Scheduled deliveries for later this week. Claire Fisher: he panics. He's like, we gotta cancel. And Sal says they didn't leave names or phone numbers, just addresses. And three of them were motels in the valley. Katie Marinello: Yeah. His boss is kind of, uh, being purposely obtuse, right? He's just like, I'm making this money, I don't [00:22:00] care what's going on. But Sal, actually, this happens later, I think, but Sal makes it so that they can pay on credit card, right? So that they don't have to pay cash. 'cause he is like, most of these women haven't touched cash in years. Claire Fisher: Well, Sal is a close friend of Randy, a big supporter of his savings Katie Marinello: It's. Claire Fisher: and a pimp. Katie Marinello: It's funny because is he taking a cut? They don't really, Claire Fisher: he doesn't Katie Marinello: I don't think he's taking a cut. I think he's doing it for the love of the game. He just is like living vicariously through Randy. Claire Fisher: The audience finds Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: that Kyoko's husband Harry, who is marketing a line of, Katie Marinello: Japanese home security robots. Yes, Claire Fisher: Is building a new warehouse and his contractor is Katie Marinello: Joe. Claire Fisher: Randy's Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And because Joe has been arguing with Diane, they end up going out for a drink to commiserate about their lives. Joe shows a picture of his son. Joe (Robert Ginty): Does this kid look like a fruit to you? Harry Bruckner (Vic Taybak): You [00:23:00] can't tell these days. Joe (Robert Ginty): I think I'm entitled to be a little concerned here. I try to talk to the wife about it. She won't even listen Harry Bruckner (Vic Taybak): shit. You never get treated that way with an oriental woman. Yeah. Katie Marinello: . He talks about a Asian wife who throws herself in front of a bus to stop it for her husband. And Joe, to his credit, says What happened to the wife? And there's no answer to that. Claire Fisher: Harry doesn't really care about his wife. He sees her as a Katie Marinello: trophy And it's connected to his business, right? He is obsessed with Japan. And we have all met someone who's obsessed with Japan. Right. And so he is got this robot and he basically sees his wife as something else that he collected from Japan. Claire Fisher: exactly. Yeah. met people in real life whose, American husbands treated them exactly this Katie Marinello: Oh, a hundred percent. Claire Fisher: yeah, and you know, it kind of goes both ways because, you know, some of them were [00:24:00] interested in an American man 'cause they've seen in American movies that American men are really cool. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And that ladies and gentlemen is why, you should be wary of believing anything you hear ever from anyone under any circumstances. Trust no one. Katie Marinello: Why do we keep coming back to that? Trust no one, believe nothing. Claire Fisher: Yeah, exactly. So overhears Randy on the phone with Jenny and he's insisting, no, I'm not ashamed of you. And she assumes this means he is Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and is embarrassed to tell them. But this is where he establishes his parents' 20th anniversary party is at the Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So Diane and Joe, 20 years together and they're about to have a huge misunderstanding Katie Marinello: huge misunderstanding in a comedy. Claire Fisher: At the construction site. There's trailers on the site and there's like a sofa bed in the office. 'cause you know, sometimes on construction sites you have overnight security or whatever. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: assistant Linda asked if she could crash there 'cause they were painting her [00:25:00] apartment. then he comes back from drinking with Harry and having forgotten that. Also crashes out on this sofa, and when they wake up in the morning, they realize no one's gonna believe that they just both happened to fall asleep. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: gonna think they, they have a thing going on. Katie Marinello: So she absolutely promises. She swears that she won't tell anyone, and then the phone rings and because she's his secretary. She automatically picks it up. And of course it's his wife and she hears Linda is played by EG Daley, who is best known as Tommy Pickles on Rugrats. Buttercup on the Powderpuff girls. Rudy to Booty on Chalkzone and Julius on Julius Jr. She was also the voice of Babe in Pig of the City. Bam. Bam. Rubble in the live action film, The Flintstones and Froggy in The Little Rascals. Claire Fisher: Wow. Okay. Katie Marinello: know. It was like, oh wow, okay. So very famous person, maybe Not a very famous face. Claire Fisher: Right. I [00:26:00] recognize the voice and now I Katie Marinello: Yep. Claire Fisher: So Sal has done the math. He says to Randy, you only need to do 43 more dates, special deliveries, Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and you can pay your tuition. You can get back to Jenny. So he decides to go for it. And his next date is Kirstiee Alley Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: who is in a mood. Katie Marinello: a mood. She's mad. Yeah. Claire Fisher: She's clearly mad at someone, she's rude, she's bossy. Katie Marinello: Everything he does is wrong. Claire Fisher: What kind of a professional lover are you? And he ends up saying like, if you're upset about something, maybe this isn't really what you want. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: it turns out. She really wants to make her husband jealous because she just found out he's sleeping with one of his nurses. She and Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: her husband are both doctors. He's been sleeping with a nurse on the night Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So instead of going to bed together, they end up just talking about like how upset she is and she starts giving him dancing Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And so she's throwing him around the room as they're dancing to, the Great American songbook. Katie Marinello: songbook Claire Fisher: She [00:27:00] admits, it's kind of surprising he'd be willing to dance with someone who theoretically hired him for sex Katie Marinello: sex Claire Fisher: And he is like, I'm having a great Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And she says, well, you're worth every penny. Clearly, right Katie Marinello: So then we have a montage. Claire Fisher: where he. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: start learning how to treat a woman right He calls Jen, he gets the voicemail. He tells her, you're right, I've been a terrible boyfriend, but I'm gonna Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: summer. So we see him teaching himself Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Um, his father trying to get him to play, catch, or read a football magazine in hopes that straightening them out. He goes on dates with different women. He practices massage on a dummy. He has assembled from his Katie Marinello: baseball bats Claire Fisher: He's leaving roses on pillows. He's feeding women ice cream. Sal is adding up the take on the Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. I do have questions about his rose budget because it seems like it would be cutting into his tuition money, but yeah, his, his signature becomes leaving a rose on the pillow as he leaves. Claire Fisher: Yeah. And he's listening attentively as women talk about what they did [00:28:00] before they got married. His boss is unpacking massive crates of extra anchovies. He is leaving voicemails for Jen, who the audience could see. She's listening even though she didn't Katie Marinello: She won't answer the phone and hasn't called him back. Claire Fisher: And Sal says, well, less expenses we've taken in $6,800. Right. And you now take all major credit cards. But it'll only ever show up on their statement as Senor Pizza Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Right Katie Marinello: Sal says he, he does the books for the. Business, so it won't matter. Like Claire Fisher: yeah. Katie Marinello: will never notice. He's just busy unloading anchovies. Claire Fisher: A frenemy from college who we saw in the opening Katie Marinello: Oh yeah. Jorry Yeah. Stupid name. Claire Fisher: Is out at a make out point, making out with a Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: looks over and sees that Randy is making out with a Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So now you're getting the sense, well, he's not gonna be able to keep this up Katie Marinello: No. Claire Fisher: Right. Katie Marinello: So, Jory is Dylan Walsh. Um, best known for being on [00:29:00] Nip/Tuck, as Dr. Sean mc McNamara and also Sam Lane on Superman, and Lois and David Hollander on Heated Rivalry. So he's having a good year. Claire Fisher: Oh my word. The number of articles that have been written about slash fiction Katie Marinello: Uh, it's, I mean. Claire Fisher: to make a grown Katie Marinello: It's amazing. I don't, I haven't seen it yet, but somebody said it's been a really good year for hockey. First nobody cared about hockey. Then we only cared if they were having gay sex. Then the men's team, or I guess both the men's and women's team took home gold medals. Claire Fisher: and the men's team hadn't in 46 years. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Um, Katie Marinello: then they got to party with Kash Patel, which actually sounds like a punishment, but, Claire Fisher: Uh, just say heated rivalry has brought new attention to the sport of hockey and to the art of writing fan fiction about your favorite characters having gay Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: another. An art form, which [00:30:00] we as lifelong Trekkies have come to appreciate. Katie Marinello: Right. So I hope Dylan Walsh is having a good day, is what I'm saying. Claire Fisher: So now we see Carrie Fisher finally. She is a photographer. She takes anatomical landscape pictures. her husband is a professional bodybuilder. He's built like a god. And he's all about the fitness and the healthy lifestyle. And, he's a personal trainer for women who live on grapefruit and she feels like she has to hide her pork chops in the Katie Marinello: freezer because Claire Fisher: how can I ever measure up? And Randy says, well, maybe he likes you the way you're, Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: um, and she says, let me show you what I got for my birthday. And it's an exercise bike. Katie Marinello: Oh, reminds me of that terrible Peloton commercial. Do you remember that one? Claire Fisher: Know, when my husband and I were first dating, I mentioned something I wanted to work on personally. And he being a really well-meaning person, went to the bookstore self-help section and selected me a self-help book that was meant to help you work with that. On that [00:31:00] thing, thinking, I will fetch my beloved, something that can help her in her quest and on our anniversary, he handed me a self-help book wrapped up Katie Marinello: And you still married him, Claire Fisher: and after a lengthy conversation about why that might not be a great romantic gift, he apologized and now we're Katie Marinello: The husband is played by Peter Allen Koch who is an American actor and former professional football player. And he played college football for the Maryland Terrapins. All roads lead back to Maryland. Where I currently live. Claire Fisher: And then instead of going to bed, Katie Marinello: starts taking pictures of her. Claire Fisher: yeah. Picks up the camera and says, I'll do some anatomical landscapes of you. And, you know, they're goofing Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and this is when he starts to feel guilty about the line of work he's found himself in. Katie Marinello: Guilty. And also terrified because he sees a picture of this bodybuilder who has muscles that are, you know, bodybuilder size. Claire Fisher: So he has a dream that, her husband is gonna show up and [00:32:00] beat him up, and then he'll go to the hospital, but the doctor will be Kirstiee Alley's husband, and it'll just be a whole thing. Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So meanwhile, Joe, his father calls home late at night to say that some catastrophe has arisen at the work site and he's gonna have to stay the night. but his wife can hear women talking in the background, and when she says, who's that? He says, it's just a couple of hookers. Now the can see that sex workers are hitting on his Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: who are standing out on the street late Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: But Diane of course assumes this means he's out partying without Katie Marinello: Right. And the issue that happened was a water main break. And so she hears wa running water and she's thinks he is like in the shower with some hookers. or like a jacuzzi or something Claire Fisher: So she goes to her doctor because she's now having chest pains from anxiety and who's her doctor? Katie Marinello: Kirstie Alley. Claire Fisher: And Kirstie Alley says, well, if you wanna get revenge on a cheating husband, here's who Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: You call [00:33:00] this numbered, you order extra anchovies. Katie Marinello: And it's supposed to get all back to the future. Creepy. Claire Fisher: And this is when the walls start to close Katie Marinello: It's so funny to me. I'm like, how small is LA Claire Fisher: well, how small is the circle of upper class women who'd pay $200 to be fucked by the pizza Katie Marinello: in LA? I feel like there's a lot of, anyway, it's, it works for the story, right? Everybody's kind of connected to everyone else. So we already know that, that the first lady after Alex's husband is connected to his father, now we have this connection between Kirstie Alley character and his mother. And so, yeah, so the walls start closing in. Claire Fisher: So Randy is in a bubble bath with Kyoko, and he says he is been having some nightmares about husbands. And lo and behold, her husband, whose warehouse project just got delayed because the water main break comes home midday, wanting to bitch about work trouble. And Randy, like he has to hide under the bubble bath, breathing through a cocktail straw. Uh, he has to hide under the bed. He accidentally [00:34:00] triggers the robotic security system Katie Marinello: Which works well, I guess because it's interesting to me, and this is so irrelevant, but the robot seems to understand that he doesn't belong there, but with the other people walk by him, he's fine. Japanese Robot: Oy-a! Intruder alert! Trespasser! Oy! So, Claire Fisher: Harry is very suspicious. So he checks Kyoko's Date book, and he sees that this morning she had a appointment with Dr. Palmer. Now the audience knows this means she was hanging out with Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Alley. 'cause you know, they go out to the same salon, but he thinks that means she's sleeping with Dr. Reed Palmer. So Katie Marinello: Jackass, he assumes the doctor's a man. Claire Fisher: So he storms into the hospital and grabs Dr. Palmer Who by the way, is Robert Picardo, Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: coming Katie Marinello: Keeps coming up. Yes. So who is Robert Picardo? He, Claire, I think you should tell them. Claire Fisher: yeah. Uh, he was the garbage man in the Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: was the funeral director in, Amazon Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And within a few years of this movie [00:35:00] coming out, he would become the emergency medical hologram on Star Trek, Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and then spend the rest of his career working in scifi Bryan pointed out, that's the opposite of what Carrie Fisher did. Katie Marinello: Right. Claire Fisher: out a sci-fi icon and then did Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: He did like bit parts in comedy until he got his big sci-fi Katie Marinello: point. Yeah. Claire Fisher: So anyway. Now Harry, did we say who plays Harry? Katie Marinello: Vic Tabak, who's best known for playing Mel Sharples, the gruff diner owner in the sitcom Alice, for which he earned two Golden Globe nominations. And then he reprised the character in the film, version called Alice Doesn't Live Here anymore, Claire Fisher: so Harry storms into a hospital operating room and grabs Katie Marinello: how can you, Claire Fisher: Palmer. Katie Marinello: there's like so many levels of security before you get into the operating room, but Okay. Claire Fisher: He grabs Dr. Palmer and says, you've been screwing my wife. And Dr. Palmer says, Darlene never told me she was Katie Marinello: Right, Claire Fisher: Darlene being Katie Marinello: right. Claire Fisher: he's been Katie Marinello: It's like, who the hell is Darlene? Claire Fisher: so the two of [00:36:00] them decide to join forces and Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Palmer admits he's known that his wife is having an affair because the Fred Astaire records have been out and he's been seeing roses on the pillow. But he thought it was fair because he's been sleeping with Darlene. but Harry says, . Oh yeah, there've been roses on the pillow at my place Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: And then,, Palmer says, well, I mean, I noticed the roses show up the day she sees her personal trainer, it's Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: probably her personal trainer Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So they go over to the personal trainer's house and who is it But Claude Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Who thinks they're burglars. And he just starts crying. He says, you guys are robbing my house. My wife's having an affair. Fine. Take my candlesticks. Katie Marinello: It's such a brilliant move because you think, 'cause he walks up behind them while they're like, knocking his window in that he's gonna. You know, curb stomp them and instead he just starts crying because he's so heartbroken over his wife. Unclear if he actually is sleeping with his clients. Right. Does he ever admit that? Claire Fisher: no, they never Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: This is where things really start to happen. Very Katie Marinello: [00:37:00] Yes. Claire Fisher: if, how Katie Marinello: There's a lot Claire Fisher: summarize. Katie Marinello: like literally one person walking this way, one person walking this way, and they don't see each other, right? Very sitcomy kind of, hijinks ensue Claire Fisher: So Randy goes to Tony, the Italian guy, and says, do husbands ever come after you? And Tony says, yeah, I once had one come after me with a knife. Katie Marinello: and I bit his ear off. I bit his ear off and he never bothered me again. Claire Fisher: so Randy is not a fighter, and he goes to Sal and says, I gotta get outta this. I got husbands after me and Sal says, you could hit your savings goal with one Katie Marinello: One more job. Pull him in for one last job. And who is it? Claire Fisher: Diane, Katie Marinello: His mother. Ah, Claire Fisher: anchovies Katie Marinello: to a motel room. Claire Fisher: not to the house. Katie Marinello: On the day of the anniversary party. Claire Fisher: yeah. And then Jenny shows up at Senor Pizza. She took the bus down from Santa Barbara 'cause she's gonna go to this 20th anniversary party and she shows up at the pizza place. And Sal is trying to keep her [00:38:00] busy Katie Marinello: yeah. He'll be right back. Just have a seat. I'll get you a pizza. Sal's a good friend. Sal's a good friend, Claire Fisher: Yeah. Katie Marinello: not a good friend. Claire Fisher: a pimp. Katie Marinello: Well, he is a pimp. That's not taking any money or abusing his subjects, so he, Claire Fisher: Okay, fine. Katie Marinello: His friend has a goal and he's trying to meet, help him meet that goal by cooking the books and pimping 'em out. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Mm-hmm. You, you see why the definition of good friend here is Katie Marinello: Okay. But there's no indication that he's passing the number around. He's just taking the calls. Claire Fisher: fine. So Randy realizes the date is his mother and jumps out the window of the bathroom Katie Marinello: was really cute there's a little girl like playing on a pool toy, like the whale that we used to have, right? The big floaty. And he said, can you bring it here? And she moves it over in front of the window and then he drops the pizza down and she says, mommy, can I have slice of pizza? And mommy's like, maybe later dear. And then, [00:39:00] yeah, he jumps down and she laughs and it, I don't know, it was just like cute little detail. Um. Claire Fisher: so back at Senor pizza, Jory has shown up and tells Jenny, Hey, Randy's been making it with some lady old enough to be my mother. And in the parking lot, Randy is running to Tony being like, I need you to deliver this to the Motel. Tell the woman there, there are no more Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Um, he goes inside and yells at Sal for setting him up with his mother, but Sal thinks he's talking about the Jenny Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. She's gone out with Jori now. Claire Fisher: Yeah, Diane meanwhile answers the door to Tony, pulls him straight into a kiss. Tony not knowing any other context figures, this is just another American woman throwing herself at him. Katie Marinello: Yes. He's used to this kind of thing. Claire Fisher: Randy goes home to try to call Jenny and finds his father being all like, oh no, your mother hasn't come Katie Marinello: Your mother's going to leave me. Yeah. Claire Fisher: Leave me. And he says, no, go get ready for the party. I'll find mom and get her there. Meanwhile, she kissed [00:40:00] Tony once or twice and has realized she can't do this. She still loves her husband, says no to Tony, and Tony hasn't heard a no in months. So he says, I respect this. Forget the pizza. I'll buy you a sit down Katie Marinello: Right, Claire Fisher: And she's like, no, no, no, just leave here. I'll pay you $200. Right. And he says, it was only $12.50 with my Katie Marinello: right, right, right, right. I give you a special coupon. Claire Fisher: And she, this is how she finds out. He's not the usual Katie Marinello: delivery boy Claire Fisher: Right. Jory has taken Jenny out, but he tries something and she hits him. She hitchhikes Katie Marinello: She hits him with the gear shift in the crotch. I think that's important. This is how you handle someone who won't take the word no. Claire Fisher: Right. And meanwhile, the jealous husbands are comparing financial records and they realize their wives have been charging an awful lot of $200 charges to a pizza place, considering that none of their wives are noted Pizza eaters. Katie Marinello: Right. Yeah. So one of 'em is like, he hate, she hates pizza. Claire Fisher: yeah. So Tony is chasing [00:41:00] Diane's car on his motorcycle Katie Marinello: This is so weird. I respect you for saying no, but I'm gonna chase you in my motorcycle. Claire Fisher: Because he thinks she's playing Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: the husbands are on the same highway in Harry's car on their way to beat up the delivery guy and rocking out to Great Balls of Fire, which is very funny. That was already a pretty old song by this Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: point, right? Um, Randy and Jenny have managed to come face to face at the pizza Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and he notices that she changed her hair and she's like, you never notice Katie Marinello: Right? Because he's become observant and sensitive by treating all these older women like people while they treat him like a piece of meat. Claire Fisher: Jory shows up to hit Jenny for rejecting him. Randy says, let's take this outside. Then the husbands show up wanting to beat up the delivery guy and the boss says, oh, the delivery guy's out back. they get out there, Harry recognizes Randy from his father's pictures and says, oh, that's not Katie Marinello: He is a homo. Yeah. Claire Fisher: right? so then they figure it [00:42:00] must be Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: So they start beating up Jory and Randy and Jenny run away in the Katie Marinello: And you think this is gonna be a beautiful moment of the bully getting his retribution. And that'll just be like a quick cut, but No, no, they really beat him up. They really, really, really beat him up. And then they put him in the trunk of their car and you're like, okay, this guy is a bully and, uh, attempted rapist, but I'm not sure he deserves to die. Claire Fisher: Well, they're gonna take him back to Harry's house and demand that Kyoko confirm she's been sleeping with Katie Marinello: Right. Claire Fisher: By the way, when they get there, Kyoko is packing her bags. Katie Marinello: She's done with this. Yeah. Claire Fisher: Uh, Katie Marinello: like, who is this? Claire Fisher: who's Katie Marinello: he's like, oh, I know who the usual delivery driver is. You know, Jory So he is gonna sell out Randy, Claire Fisher: So meanwhile, Randy has done the most honest thing he's done all year Katie Marinello: and actually tell Jenny the whole story. And she asks him, how would you feel if I told you that I had to sleep with all these men in order to, you know, learn my [00:43:00] lessons and make my money? And he is very honest. He is like, I would hate it. She says, just take me back to the bus station. He says, okay, so, right. So we've had all these men who won't take no for an answer, who are really just teaching a, like you could show that whole sequence in a class on, toxic masculinity. And he says, that's fine, but I have to make a stop first. And she's like, where? He says, I have to go save my parents' marriage. So he takes her to the party. Claire Fisher: at the anniversary party, Diane, Tony, Randy, and Jenny all arrive at the same time. Joe and Diane run into each other's arms, mutually apologizing. Tony starts making a scene and Joe tells Randy, I've thought about it and it's really okay that you're gay, but this isn't the proper place for a scene with your lover. And Tony says, what? I'm not with him. I'm in love with Diane. And then a fight breaks out, Katie Marinello: Right. Claire Fisher: and of course, this is when the jealous husbands and Jory show up, Katie Marinello: So it's like a 16 way fight Claire Fisher: it turns into a ballroom blitz. [00:44:00] Katie Marinello: Yeah, exactly. Claire Fisher: Diane hits Tony with a pineapple and he lands in Linda's lap, Katie Marinello: Yes. And apparently that's supposed to be a beautiful, meet cute, Claire Fisher: I've had women fall in my lap before, but it was mostly because they were having medical trouble. Katie Marinello: okay. You've been dating the same person for your entire adult life anyway. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Mm-hmm. The band keeps up playing while this is all going on, by the way, they're very specific that it's the live music still playing Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: Down. Right? Which is very funny. The husbands shove the piano out a plate glass window, and it hits a cop car. Katie Marinello: Right. So now the cops are, yeah. Now the cops are on the case and Yeah. They arrest the three husbands Claire Fisher: and the husbands are all saying, this guy's been porking our wives. And Joe's like, wait, you're not gay? And he's like, gay, [00:45:00] no, I've been sleeping with women. And then he says, mom, dad, this is Jenny. Katie Marinello: and we've been living together for two semesters. Claire Fisher: and I'm in love with her Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: And the parents are just delighted by this news because that's way better than what they thought was happening, Katie Marinello: They would rather he be a prostitute than gay, and I just have to say parents everywhere because I know this still happens. Please reevaluate your priorities for the love of God. Not that there's anything wrong with sex work, but there's also like really, really, really nothing wrong with being in love with someone of the same gender, Claire Fisher: At least that one's legal, Katie Marinello: legal and safer. Claire Fisher: Yeah. So Randy gets the band to play. They can't take that away from me Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: 'cause he's been taking Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: lessons. and Diane, Randy and Jenny start dancing through the ruins of the Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: and Joe tells Randy, I will pay for your tuition if you've decided on a major. And he has, he lists off the classes he wants to take and they're all interests that he came up with[00:46:00] Katie Marinello: During Claire Fisher: you know, Katie Marinello: the times that he was courting these women or like getting into their interests. Yeah, it's cute. But he does say that he'll pay for college because he clearly knows what he is doing and I wasn't sure that he meant the major. Claire Fisher: I think he meant Jenny Katie Marinello: yeah, sure. Anyway. Claire Fisher: parents. Well, people of a certain generation. So in our case it was our grandparents. They really wanted me to meet my husband in Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: or high school, if at all possible. And when I did find someone, they were really excited about it. Katie Marinello: Yes. Claire Fisher: Right. Katie Marinello: And very concerned that I was going to be alone forever. And of course that's not even a people of a certain age. It's now people of a certain. Political persuasion. Claire Fisher: , So they're all dancing. Tony and Linda join in. Sal has, started dancing. Sal sat down next to an older woman who was a guest at the party, and she says, you're friends with Randy. And so they start [00:47:00] dancing. Okay, so this is very funny because have you ever seen Rebel without a Cause? Katie Marinello: No. Claire Fisher: Some of the last lines in Rebel without a Cause are mom, dad, this is Judy. Katie Marinello: Oh yeah. Claire Fisher: So I thought this was probably a reference to that, but in that case, there's been like a murder Katie Marinello: Yeah. But that makes sense. 'cause also like the poster for this movie is very the graduate. So it kind of makes sense. They're like parodying a couple different things here. Claire Fisher: Yeah. Then the credits roll, but then there's a mid credit Katie Marinello: mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: I thought was Katie Marinello: Yeah, it was interesting. Randy (Patrick Dempsey): Oh, well, by the way, the husbands. Their wives did show up to bail them out. Claude and Monica, they decided to forget the whole thing. Joyce and Reed, well, they weren't gonna forget anything, but they decided to make up anyway. Kyoko was gonna bail out Harry, but then it hit her. Why ruin a good thing? [00:48:00] Hey. Katie Marinello: Carrie's character and the bodybuilder decided to forget the whole thing. He scoops her up and carries her away, Claire Fisher: up and Katie Marinello: yeah, the two doctors, decide they're never gonna forget it, but they're gonna make it work anyway. Claire Fisher: Kyoko Katie Marinello: goes to bail him out and then says actually, and he says, why mess with a good thing and she just leaves, so. Claire Fisher: She goes to enjoy her peace She's had enough of his racialized Katie Marinello: nonsense Claire Fisher: and uh, is gonna just leave him Katie Marinello: And that's it. That's the end. And I really think I liked it. What did you think? Claire Fisher: of this were actually very Katie Marinello: Yeah, I thought it was, you know, a silly little romcom with a little twist of, it's not even that raunchy because they don't really show anything, right? Like they show him kind of waking up in the morning and he even says to Jenny, I didn't sleep with all of them. Some of them just wanted to be listened to, or some of them just so it was very Shampoo, but it felt like it gave [00:49:00] more, credence to that because , you actually see him listening and getting into what they're into. And, the shampoo ending was like, do you hear them talk about us? All they wanna talk about is how much we don't, but the character doesn't show that he understands women any better than anyone else throughout the movie. This kid seems to actually make an arc a change throughout the course of the movie. Claire Fisher: I have two reviews of this movie. One, if I don't take it seriously and Katie Marinello: one if I do Claire Fisher: if I take nothing about it. Seriously, it's actually kind of Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: It's like this completely clueless boy, learns this meaning of life by listening Katie Marinello: to women Claire Fisher: um, and therefore dodges the toxic masculinity trap that he would fall into if he tried to listen to any of the men in his universe Katie Marinello: Right? Claire Fisher: If I take any of the premise Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: women don't like to fuck their gigolos. Katie Marinello: Yeah. I didn't really think that was the.[00:50:00] Claire Fisher: Uh, no. Women hire sex workers for the same reasons men hire sex workers, which is because they want to have sex Katie Marinello: I was surprised when he said none of them slept together because before that, or like some of them didn't sleep together because before that I very much assumed that he was sleeping with all of them after the photography, after the dance, you know? Claire Fisher: right. Katie Marinello: So yeah, I see your point there, but I feel like the blame for the issues in each of these marriages that we see does fall squarely on the men. It's not like they're saying, oh, these women only want X, Y, Z. Claire Fisher: and I also don't think Jenny should take him back at the end. Katie Marinello: Yeah. That, yeah. Claire Fisher: I, I think that the, Katie Marinello: I think he'd be a great boyfriend for the next girl. Claire Fisher: Right. And, and she should say I respect you've been on a arc of self Katie Marinello: Yeah. Claire Fisher: Call me up when you're ready to try monogamy. Right? Katie Marinello: The only argument I'll make for that is that they were broken up. It's not like he was cheating on her the whole time. She did not pick up the phone or call him back. She even says she came to the party without calling and [00:51:00] RSVPing. So like they had not spoken all summer. So he's not with her, it's not like he's cheating on her this whole summer. Claire Fisher: yeah. But I mean, , dating a sex worker is a Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: that some people Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: I didn't see that as true to Jenny's Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. Claire Fisher: presented in the film. Katie Marinello: Yeah, she definitely changes her mind somewhere during that 16 way fight. And it's not really explained like what the change was because she already knew all the context. Right. And she'd said no. Claire Fisher: maybe she just finally saw the funny side as he was setting Harry's toupee on fire Katie Marinello: Right. Right. Or he is a really good dancer and so, but we don't know. I mean, they're young who they could make, they could break up the next Thanksgiving break for all we know. Right. The point is like what he's learned as he's gone through this Claire Fisher: yeah, Katie Marinello: this summer, I mean, there's not really a point. It's a funny movie. Claire Fisher: It's funny, it actually is funny and the physical comedy Katie Marinello: so good. Claire Fisher: we haven't been able to do that justice Katie Marinello: Yeah. It's really hard to explain, but it [00:52:00] is so funny and so many like cool shots of like, like his mom walking up on the terrace and him walking by the pool and you know, like those kinds of like just, Claire Fisher: or Katie Marinello: if you just look down, we would just be able to solve this whole issue. Claire Fisher: that one partner who has a princess fantasy, so she's put curtains all around the bed and that he can't find the entrance to the curtains. So he's just feeling around. Just, Katie Marinello: Yeah, no, I mean, there's a lot of really interesting and the montage is very interesting and yes. So maybe we can clip some things to put them on our Instagram. Follow us on Instagram, carry it away. Pod. Yeah. Okay. Well, let's talk about Carrie. Claire Fisher: I mean, it is a very brief performance. She gets three scenes, no, two scenes, and one of them is just her bailing her husband out at Katie Marinello: Mm-hmm. With voiceover, Claire Fisher: yeah. Katie Marinello: but I mean, she has in some ways taken control of her life. Claire Fisher: Hmm. She toyed with having an affair and then went back to her husband Katie Marinello: Yeah. [00:53:00] Yeah. We don't know if they ever actually slept together. And we don't know that he ever actually had an affair. So his sin might actually be just giving a really bad Christmas present or birthday present, whatever it was. Claire Fisher: And hey, some people are just not that great at picking out presents Katie Marinello: Exactly. And like that's his interest. So why wouldn't she be I anyway. Um, I don't know. Three. Claire Fisher: She's not the most interesting date in the Katie Marinello: No, Claire Fisher: but she doesn't have anything that's disempowering, so, Katie Marinello: Exactly. Claire Fisher: Fine. Katie Marinello: Three. Okay, so what are we watching next? Claire Fisher: well, it kind of depends. The next thing that's on the list is one of those things that goes back and forth over whether it's Lost Media or not. Katie Marinello: Oh, Claire Fisher: Two Daddies to Love Me. It was the cartoon sequel to that. Happily Ever After PSA Katie Marinello: oh, so we gotta see if we can find it. Claire Fisher: if we can find it, we'll be talking about Katie Marinello: Okay. Claire Fisher: Oh, and by the way, can I just say I was deeply disappointed that in a movie used the Great American songbook to [00:54:00] such great effect in its soundtrack, they did not once mention the Backdoor Santa Song Katie Marinello: It's not a Christmas movie.
