Sanity at the Movies

Our heroes review a (the?) John Wayne/John Ford classic, The Quiet Man, one of the most beloved classic films of all time.

Starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, The Quiet Man is a romantic comedy-drama set in rural Ireland in the early 20th century. The film tells the story of Sean Thornton, an American boxer who returns to his ancestral home in Ireland to reclaim his family's land and start a new life. Along the way, he falls in love with a fiery local woman named Mary Kate Danaher, but their romance is complicated by Mary Kate's brother, who refuses to give her the dowry she needs to marry.

Our heroes explore how the film portrays Ireland's history and culture, as well as its commentary on sex roles and family dynamics. Just who wins the battle of the sexes in this movie anyway? The Answer May Shock You!
