connect some of our pieces. 00:02:50.840 --> 00:02:56.020 I got back this week from a wonderful time of being up at Black Mountain Children's Home 00:02:56.020 --> 00:02:58.720 with some of our men and doing missions work. 00:02:58.720 --> 00:03:02.220 And so I wanted to share with you guys, give you guys a quick update of that trip. 00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:08.740 I will say the challenge that this, that the Black Mountain leaders gave us to this group 00:03:08.740 --> 00:03:09.920 of men was this. 00:03:10.460 --> 00:03:16.920 Try to be as good as your middle schoolers, because they've 00:08:03.840 So church, thank you, thank you so, so much. 00:08:04.280 --> 00:08:10.180 Well, as we look at Psalm chapter 16, I want to kind of give a little bit of background as 00:08:10.180 --> 00:08:11.840 I can to kind of give a setting. 00:08:11.960 --> 00:08:14.420 We've tried to do that each week. 00:08:14.760 --> 00:08:19.940 Now, we know from the very beginning what we see added in here is that this is a psalm 00:08:19.940 --> 00:08:20.720 written by David. 00:08:20.880 --> 00:08:23.800 David has written a little bit over 50% of the psalms. 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:27.440 Some of them that we've looked at during this series have been psalms of David, some of 00:08:27.440 --> 00:08:28.000 them have not. 00:08:28.100 --> 00:08:29.300 This is a psalm of David. 00:08:29.300 --> 00:08:36.320 Now, what we do not know about this is we do not know when in the life of David that he 00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:37.660 wrote this psalm. 00:08:37.960 --> 00:08:43.480 But what we do know as we read through, and this is going to be a theme that you see, is 00:08:43.480 --> 00:08:51.740 David is writing this psalm out of personal joy, out of the joy that he has experienced 00:08:51.740 --> 00:08:54.000 in his relationship with God. 00:08:54.100 --> 00:09:02.740 Now, I'm going to refer to it as personal joy in Christ, knowing that Christ hasn't come 00:09:02.740 --> 00:09:04.600 yet, but Christ is. 00:09:05.320 --> 00:09:13.040 And so even as David looks forward, he knows the longing of his Messiah who will come, his 00:09:13.040 --> 00:09:14.320 Messiah who will save. 00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:22.420 And in fact, in a wonderful first person possessive over and over, over 12 times in this psalm, 00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:29.880 as David talks about the joy that's experienced in a relationship with God, he says, my, my. 00:09:30.580 --> 00:09:36.460 Now, this doesn't mean this isn't for all of us, but in the intimacy of the moment. 00:09:37.040 --> 00:09:45.800 What David knows in the dynamic of his relationship with God is that this is for him, and that this 00:09:45.800 --> 00:09:47.640 is for those who were found in Christ. 00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:53.680 And what he'll declare and what we'll get to is that everything good of what David's going 00:09:53.680 --> 00:09:59.920 to talk about, everything good in his life, everything that you experience that's good, everything 00:09:59.920 --> 00:10:05.420 that I experience that is good, all of this comes from God. 00:10:06.380 --> 00:10:07.900 All of it flows from him. 00:10:08.800 --> 00:10:10.800 And so David is one who's received. 00:10:11.540 --> 00:10:19.160 David is one who was the youngest of the brothers, the shepherd, the least likely, but who God 00:10:19.160 --> 00:10:24.860 chose, who God called for himself to establish and to put on a throne as king. 00:10:25.180 --> 00:10:30.020 David knows that everything good that he's going to experience, everything good from his 00:10:30.020 --> 00:10:34.040 life is going to come from God. 00:10:35.040 --> 00:10:39.340 And that's going to be the central drive of his joy of what we're going to find out. 00:10:39.340 --> 00:10:45.860 But also kind of a neat aspect within this, there's a group of psalms which are looked at 00:10:45.860 --> 00:10:52.000 and identified as a messianic psalm, meaning that this, when you look at this, there's a layer 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:59.420 of prophecy that we can find within this psalm as it points to, talks about the coming 00:10:59.420 --> 00:11:06.800 Christ who will come and who will save, who will die, who will raise to life again and call 00:11:06.800 --> 00:11:07.940 for himself a people. 00:11:08.280 --> 00:11:14.160 In fact, in Acts chapter 2, Peter uses this psalm in his message. 00:11:14.280 --> 00:11:15.320 I want to read it to you. 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:16.600 It'll be on the screen. 00:11:16.680 --> 00:11:23.920 He says this, he says, men of Israel, hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested 00:11:23.920 --> 00:11:30.360 to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst. 00:11:30.360 --> 00:11:37.400 As you yourselves know, this Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge 00:11:37.400 --> 00:11:42.140 of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 00:11:42.300 --> 00:11:48.080 But God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death because it was not possible for him 00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:49.140 to be held by it. 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.380 And then verse 25, for David says concerning him. 00:11:52.560 --> 00:11:58.660 So what Peter's doing here is Peter is affirming to them what he has just proclaimed by using 00:11:58.660 --> 00:11:59.200 scripture. 00:11:59.460 --> 00:12:02.220 Now remember, there's not New Testament scripture to point back to. 00:12:02.440 --> 00:12:06.680 So the scripture that he will reference is Old Testament scripture and he references Psalm 00:12:06.680 --> 00:12:07.140 16. 00:12:07.140 --> 00:12:13.360 He says, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I might not 00:13:08.160 But as we have the opportunity to look back on it and see through the person of Jesus Christ. 00:13:08.800 --> 00:13:13.000 So let's read starting in verse 1 of Psalm 16. 00:13:14.180 --> 00:13:20.660 David writes, and he says, preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 00:13:21.300 --> 00:13:24.080 I say to the Lord, you are my Lord. 00:13:24.260 --> 00:13:26.260 I have no good apart from you. 00:13:26.780 --> 00:13:32.560 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight. 00:13:32.800 --> 00:13:37.640 The sorrow of those who run after another God shall multiply. 00:13:37.960 --> 00:13:43.520 Their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:47.280 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup. 00:13:47.860 --> 00:13:49.320 You hold my lot. 00:13:50.160 --> 00:14:19.540 So this morning what I want us to do is to look at three types of goodness that come from our relationship 00:14:19.540 --> 00:14:24.740 in Christ and my first one that I want us to look at is the goodness of Christ in life. 00:14:25.940 --> 00:14:27.940 David begins by saying, preserve me. 00:14:28.740 --> 00:14:35.860 And what David is declaring is that he needs to do God, he needs God to do something important in his life. 00:14:36.180 --> 00:14:41.240 What he needs God to do is to keep him, to preserve him, right? 00:14:41.280 --> 00:14:45.740 Like go back to your grandma's kitchen and her doing preserves and canning things, right? 00:14:45.740 --> 00:14:47.040 Why did she do those? 00:14:47.140 --> 00:14:50.940 So they wouldn't spoil, they wouldn't go to waste, they wouldn't be ruined, but instead 00:14:50.940 --> 00:14:52.200 that they will be kept. 00:14:52.300 --> 00:14:55.520 And it's the same imagery that we see with David. 00:14:55.840 --> 00:15:00.940 David says to the Lord, preserve me, keep me, keep me here. 00:15:01.060 --> 00:15:07.680 And he begins to describe a depth of relationship that he knows that he needs from the Lord. 00:15:07.680 --> 00:15:13.200 Now, what I think is really interesting in this, as I think about my mind, as I think about so many times 00:15:13.200 --> 00:15:19.900 the request that I make to God, David doesn't say, save me because he's in trouble. 00:15:20.540 --> 00:15:23.420 And there are plenty of times where David found himself in trouble. 00:15:24.380 --> 00:15:27.860 David doesn't say, reward me because of what he had done right. 00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:32.080 And there are plenty of times that David had done what God called him to 00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:35.220 and the difficult places that he had found himself in. 00:15:35.220 --> 00:15:45.360 He simply looks at God and in his expression of joy, he says, keep me, keep me. 00:15:46.340 --> 00:15:54.980 And then what we'll see is this declaration comes out of a depth of relationship of David knowing God. 00:15:55.960 --> 00:15:57.520 I want to ask you a 00:16:31.080 no, I don't know, I'm just here. 00:16:31.720 --> 00:16:37.260 Or a person in a journey of faith, of seeking to grow in your faith. 00:16:37.260 --> 00:16:39.140 Do you know God?
