Show Notes

This Week in Zone 3, Reggie and Robert are joined by returning guest Bill Faulkner, BS RT(R)(MR)(CT)FSMRT to discuss how things have changed for MRI Techs since he first started in MRI.

The conversation starts off with Bill discussing his love of music. Bill started MRI in 1985 on a GE when there were only two pulse sequences: spin-echo and inversion recovery.
Scan times were a lot longer back then. Parameters were limited as there were also only two choices for the matrix. No less than two signal averages. Sequences could be as long as seventeen minutes.

The topic of immobilization purposes and importance to maintain motionless positioning. To set center frequency that had to be done manually so Bill has fun reminiscing about the “old” ways of achieving this. Bill discusses the beginning of diffusion imaging and the logistics of implementing it clinically.

Gradient echo were originally referred to fast scanning techniques. Easy to achieve bright fluid with short TR times. Dynamic imaging and how to achieve arterial/venous timing. Fast spin-echo (FSE) imaging, also known as Turbo spin-echo (TSE) imaging, are commercial implementations of the RARE (Rapid Acquisition with Relaxation Enhancement) technique originally described by Hennig et al in 1986. Since that time FSE/TSE has grown to become one of the "workhorse" pulse sequences used in virtually all aspects of modern MR imaging.

Advancements in post-processing capabilities. Always an honor to be joined by someone so embedded and established in the Radiology world.

More about our Guest: William H. “Bill” Faulkner
Bill Faulkner works as an independent consultant through his own company, William Faulkner & Associates, LLC. They provide MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computed Tomography) education as well as MRI safety and clinical operations consulting. His clients include health care facilities, and medical companies such as GE, Philips, Siemens, Aspect Imaging, Invivo, Medtronic, Bracco Diagnostics, and Metrasens. He has been teaching and lecturing on MRI for over 25 years. He is an active member and Fellow of the SMRT; serving as the first president. He is a founding board member of the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS). Bill is the author of “Rad Techs Guide to MRI: Basic Physics, Instrumentation and Quality Control”. He is the co-author of “Review Questions for MRI”, and a contributing author for “MRI for Technologists”, “Handbook for MRI”, and the first edition of “The Physics of Clinical MR Taught Through Images”.

About our Sponsor:
Aegys is an innovative leader in the MRI safety industry.
Aegys is committed to providing innovative product and process solutions that enhance overall magnet safety and improve efficiency.  Their TechGate Auto is a Zone 4 Barrier System that keeps patients and MRI technologists safe.  TechGate Auto allows technologists to focus on the care of patients and efficient room turnaround rather than worrying about anyone entering the MRI room behind them. Easy to use and designed for the MRI environment, TechGate Auto is deployed whenever the technologist enters or leaves the MR room or via push-button remote control, providing an immediate physical restriction of access to all unauthorized individuals.

The use of a “caution” barrier at the entrance to the MR room is now a recommendation of the American College of Radiology MR Safety Committee.
