You can load your car with a tourist guide to Portland, download restaurant menus, pack an umbrella, and dream about the whole weekend. But if you get on I-84 heading east, none of it matters. You're going the wrong direction. Your destination isn't determined by your dreams, your plans, or your intentions. It's determined by the step you actually take.
That's the principle of the path — and it shows up in the stories of real people who made decisions that seemed small at the time. A young couple who moved to a new city, couldn't quite find a church that felt right, drifted — and years later found their faith gone, their marriage in trouble, their kids disconnected from anything they'd been raised to believe. A couple who stretched to buy a house they couldn't quite afford, watched the hours and the pressure mount, and eventually watched the thing they'd dreamed of become a symbol of everything that went wrong. Nobody saw it coming. That's exactly why you need people further down the road who can say: you may not understand the significance of this decision right now, but it will matter more than you know.
Paul says it plainly — and says he insists on it: stop waiting for your spouse to go first. Stop waiting for conditions to improve. Stop wondering when things will feel different. Get up and take one step toward making it different today. Not a dramatic gesture. One step. Taken in the direction of growth and devotion to Jesus, that step begins to unlock everything this entire series has been pointing toward.
