The Word On The Street

The bible commands us to be holy because God is holy. But what does 'holy' mean and how can we become holy? Tune into this episode to get these questions answered, plus more!

Show Notes

You get eternal life by believing in Jesus and that he died and rose again for your sins. As followers of Jesus, we live differently. Living differently is not what gets us to Heaven, it is not what makes us a Christian.

Some people think their deeds are a bit like a seesaw, with good deeds on one side and bad deeds on the other and the good has to outweigh the bad. This is not true! We do good deeds because we love God and are grateful for him saving us. We do them because he asks us to. He wants us to be different.

He asks us to be holy:

Bible Passage: 1 Peter 1:15 -16
“Always live as God’s holy people should, because God is the one who chose you, and he is holy. That’s why the Scriptures say, “I am the holy God, and you must be holy too.”

This topic could have fitted into last term’s ‘God is’ because God is holy. If you sit in with your parents at church, it is likely you have sung songs about God’s holiness. The Psalms are a book of the bible full of poems and songs about God’s holiness. Psalm 99 “Holy is he!”

But what does HOLY mean?

It is quite a complicated word, but to start to understand it, we need to know that it means pure and set apart in a spiritual way.

Clean white snow may be pure and you could set it apart but it isn’t holy as its not spiritual.

God is holy, which means he is pure (sinless) and special (set apart). This is the attribute that makes God so wonderful, so beautiful, so worthy of us following him.

We are holy too if we believe in him, as we are pure and set apart.

Bible Passage: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
“You are God’s temple and that his Spirit lives in you. Together you are God’s holy temple.”

The Holy Spirit makes us holy.

What do you think?

I am going to list some things and I want you to think, what else do you think is holy? Feel free to pause if you want longer to think it through.

  • Does God make grass holy? Plants?
  • Is your house holy?
  • Is your church holy?
  • Can water be holy?
  • Are people holy? Which people?
Whatever God chooses to make holy is holy.

God appeared to Moses and chatted with him. He appeared as a burning bush and told Moses to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. The ground was made holy because of God’s presence. It was special ground, set apart for God at the moment in time.

The White episode from the very beginning of The Word On The Street discusses the idea of purity and perfection.

Set apart though. What does that mean?

Story Time!

Jordan plays soccer for a rep team. What does this mean, what is required of him, why was he set apart?

God sets us apart to be pure. He makes us holy and he does it through his son on the cross.
But the command to be holy doesn’t just mean let God make you set apart and pure.
We are to act set apart and pure as well.

Question Time!
  1. 1 Peter 1:15 says, “Always live as God’s holy people should.” How should God’s holy people live?
  2. How should God's holy people live?
