INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES. IN THE NEWS TODAY, IN CAMPUS NEWS, A UW-Madison student is accused of recording up to 50 videos of others in a dorm bathroom. A criminal complaint alleges the student would video others in a bathroom at Sellery Residence Hall, and a UW-Madison police officer was dispatched after this occurred twice on Saturday afternoon. The student, following the situation, complained to his housefellow and identified the suspect as Braden Berndt, a 19-year-old sixth floor Sellery resident. He was arrested Sunday afternoon in his dorm and was charged with three counts of disorderly conduct and three counts of capturing an image depicting nudity without consent. The student who made the complaint claimed he used the B tower sixth-floor men’s bathroom when he encountered the alleged perpetrator. Within the report, the student claimed there was strange behavior after the same phone had fallen in his stall for the same amount of time, four seconds, twice. This student later created a group chat with sixth floor members, connecting with another student with a similar story. Both students went to the bathroom together and, when the phone fell, searched through it to find multiple bathroom videos from the floor upward. These two students confronted the suspect and asked the videos be deleted, of which there were around 40-50. The suspect, Berndt, is banned from Sellery Hall and posted bond on Tuesday. IN STATE NEWS, Democratic lawmakers accused Republican leaders Tuesday of shutting down the Wisconsin legislature. Democrats are concerned about the next 10 months while major issues affecting families across the state remain unresolved. At a news conference, Democrats said GOP lawmakers are walking away from critical work on school funding, special education reimbursements and rising household costs for health care, groceries and housing. Democrats argued there are still plenty of days left on the legislative calendar to address these pressing issues, but said Republicans are instead prioritizing election-year politics and culture-war fights. Quote "They're following the president's lead, ignoring the economic realities that families are facing and driving wedges between our communities,"End-Quote, one Democratic lawmaker said. Democrats are pressuring Republicans to stay in session longer, release remaining housing funds and allow a vote on postpartum Medicaid expansion. IN NATIONAL NEWS, President Trump, just weeks after backlash from racist social media post, hosts Black History Month reception. Trump hosted a White House reception on Wednesday following his posting of a racist video depicting former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, as primates in a jungle. He did not reference the video that he refused to apologize for posting, which was deleted following widespread backlash. He chose not to reference Barack Obama, America’s first black president, during his presentation, however he did reference other historically important Black Americans. Trump also made note of popular Republican supporters who have appeared alongside him in recent media, including boxer Mike Tyson and rapper Nicki Minaj. He spoke to multiple policies which he claimed benefited Black Americans like that of the elimination of federal income taxes on tips and the deployment of National Guard troops among cities with large populations of Black residents, namely Washington, New Orleans, Memphis, and Tennessee. Trump, while he has acknowledged Black History Month throughout his career, has consistently targeted efforts of diversity. In particular, his eradication of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion programs across the nation have inhibited many Black Americans from job opportunities. Furthermore, Trump referenced his $500 million funding to HBCUs, which simultaneously took federal money from colleges with large populations of Hispanic students. This pool of money is just days after the Department of Education reallocated $350 million away from other grant programs with high percentages of minority students. IN ECONOMIC NEWS, Microsoft plans to invest $50 billion to bring AI to lower-income countries to combat the inequality spread. This plan is set to be in place by the end of the decade as the technology gap continues to grow, Microsoft said Wednesday at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. At this conference, leaders in technology, government officials, and AI researchers debate AI’s applications in various countries. There is a clear global concern that the unequal implementation of AI currently is widening the development gap between lower and higher income countries. In December, the United Nations Development Project called for global cooperation to equalize a set of standards to ensure AI, quote “functions as a shared public good rather than a concentrated advantage,” end quote. Last year, Microsoft invested $80 billion into data centers, more than half of which were solely for the United States. The use of AI in the global north is around twice that of the global south. The $50 billion will be implemented to help build data centers and extend internet connectivity. This key issue of internet access can be demonstrated by only 36% for Africa’s population having access in 2022, compared to 90% of U.S. households.
