The Whiskers Sanctuary: Sleep Stories for Cat Lovers

Tonight’s story is inspired by the true story of Ernest Hemingway, his famous six-toed cats, and the extraordinary colony of cats that still calls his Key West home their own.

It begins in the 1930s, when a sea captain gives Hemingway a white polydactyl kitten—a cat born with extra toes and the broad, mitten-like paws sailors had considered lucky for generations.

Her name was Snow White.

Soon, one cat led to another.

Cats wandered through Hemingway’s writing room, stretched across the warm stone floors, explored the tropical gardens, and settled wherever they pleased while Hemingway worked nearby.

Decades passed. Hemingway left Key West. His home eventually became a museum.

But the cats stayed.

Today, around fifty cats still roam the gardens and verandas of the Hemingway Home, many carrying the famous polydactyl trait that has become inseparable from the story of the house.

The palm fronds move gently.
The fountain continues.
And at Hemingway’s house… the cats remain.

This is a slow, ambient bedtime story designed to help you unwind, quiet your mind, and gently fall asleep. Inspired by true events, it’s a peaceful nighttime story about tropical evenings, literary history, extraordinary cats, and the small acts of care that sometimes continue long after we’re gone.

So settle in…

and spend a warm evening with the cats of Key West.
