We're pleased this week to highlight another "Best of The Authority" episode. This one is my conversation with Dr. Thomas Guskey, Professor Emeritus in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. He is known throughout the world for his work on student assessment, grading and reporting, professional learning, and educational research.
He's the author/editor of thirty books, including the one we discussed for this episode: Engaging Parents and Families in Grading Reforms.
We talked about:
- Defining the purpose of grading
- “Is my purpose as a teacher to select talent or develop talent?”
- The state of grading practices in US schools
- Communicating grading — what families want to know
- What do families oppose?
- What leaders get wrong about the change process
- Examples of successful grading reform in school districts
