कृष्णः ध्वजः श्वेतः जातः

कदाचित् कश्चन लुण्ठाकः पश्चात्तापं प्राप्य कञ्चित् गुरुं दृष्ट्वा सन्मार्गप्राप्तीच्छां वदति । तदा गुरुः तस्मै एकं कृष्णध्वजं दत्त्वा 'एतं गृहीत्वा तीर्थयात्रां कुरु । यदा एषः श्वेतः भविष्यति तदा भवतः पापात् मुक्तिः' इति अवदत् । शताधिकेषु तीर्थेषु तेन स्नानं कृतं चेत् अपि ध्वजः श्वेतवर्णतां न गतः । तस्मात् सः नितरां खिन्नः । अथ कदाचित् सः दशाधिकेभ्यः दुष्टेभ्यः काञ्चित् सुन्दरीं रक्षितवान् । तदा हस्ते स्थितः ध्वजः श्वेतः जातः । यदा सः प्रवृत्तं सर्वं गुरुम् अवदत् तदा गुरुः अवदत् ‘भवता तीर्थस्नानावसारे स्वप्रयोजनमात्रं चिन्तितम् आसीत् । अतः ध्वजः कृष्णवर्णः एव आसीत् । किन्तु महिलारक्षणावसरे परोपकारः चिन्तितः इति कारणतः ध्वजः श्वेतः जातः’ इति ।

A repentant thief approached a guru, seeking the right path. The guru gave him a black flag and said: ‘Carry this on your pilgrimages. When it turns white, you will be freed from sin’. The man bathed at hundreds of holy places, yet the flag remained black, leaving him disheartened. One day, however, he rescued a young woman from a group of ruffians. At that moment, the flag in his hand turned white. When he told the guru, the guru explained: ‘During pilgrimages you thought only of your own benefit, so the flag stayed black. But in saving the woman, you acted with selfless compassion — hence the flag turned white’.
