Unknown Speaker 0:00 Hi guys, are you watching the presumably final season of Ted Lasser? If you aren't, why not? And if you are, please join me Danny Manuel every week right here on this feed as we discuss the season and their love for Ted's teachings Unknown Speaker 0:32 Hello, and welcome back to the popcorn fourteener podcast. Unknown Speaker 0:38 We're basically like substack mix master classmates, The New Yorker, I'm Bankole Imoukhuede And today we're gonna be discussing the season premiere for successions final season. And joining me for this pre fork party. It's the disgusting brother. Unknown Speaker 0:56 How are you guys doing jibs at it will be a hate I love that intro at the same time. That's I don't know what to say. I didn't want to use the intro. I felt like it was so obvious but like, you know, just you have to go with what people want you always right there. I think you would have looked back and been like, why didn't I do? Unknown Speaker 1:13 Just it was so good. Unknown Speaker 1:15 How are you guys doing? It's the first time I think we had together since like, early Better Call Saul final season. Yeah, probably around about that. Hay fever is actually governed my neck and checking out right now. That was a very explicit way to to explain what is going on. Well, the thing about it is like I used to call people who used to get here five years ago then what three years it was kind of just like coming back. Just hitting the hardest, I think is just punishment for your sins. I think you deserve it after all the things you do. I think just the universe has been like trying to punish you. Are you doing? Boy? I was was not to do that was that was a while ago Unknown Speaker 1:57 but these work, like a free like a free buffet and Okay, let's talk about succession. We have a lot of things to do. Unknown Speaker 2:05 I don't like when it comes to TransGrid it's going to personal stuff and I don't like that we can talk about before we discuss the ROI because of admin ABB is currently covering the Mandalorian Season Three with Priscilla he is I am currently discussing rain dogs bi weekly with Priscilla Jade is tackling Ted lassoo phobia is gonna be discussing Barry during his final season, which starts in a couple of weeks. Unknown Speaker 2:31 About some of that stuff in between all of that. So please, if you like any of these shows, please subscribe to the podcast wherever you're listening. Please rate and review us on Apple podcasts and Spotify is full of podcasters whether we get to know when these new things drop because it's gonna be a lot. They're gonna be weeks or days where we have like things like three days in a row. So just follow as much as you can see, yes. Unknown Speaker 2:52 Yeah, the whole is the annual M is race racing to meet the Emmys deadline and they never think about the podcast as when they do this. They never think about us to real people that are hurting all of this. lol Unknown Speaker 3:06 Okay, so as we talk about succession season four episode one, I think that's what the people want. What a fucking show was an absolute shirt on. I missed the shirts. Yeah, it's titled The monsters with a you not an O which is just too funny. It's written by Jesse Armstrong and talked about talked about Mark milord. The super team. Explain why it's funny. Because I Googled I looked for it, I could not find the meaning. Unknown Speaker 3:34 I think it's a reference to like an old like, either an old shoe or like I can old rhyme. Unknown Speaker 3:41 But I don't remember the actual origins. But basically, it's kind of like what I know about it. It reminds me of this sort of like Tweedledee Tweedledum type of like dynamic between the people involved in it. Okay, so I think is kind of just I think it's just alluding to how everybody is bumbling throughout the episode for that's that's kind of what I was going to say as well it's like this show has it's so perfect at making on characters see a lot of things without saying anything but still saying a lot Unknown Speaker 4:18 is basically like the Frankenstein family essentially. Yeah. Capitalism This is what our words just just complicated airflow complicated airflow and it's just so preventing this episode like I don't want to jump okay, yes, don't jump soon. Jump let's jump. There's a safe clip with Tom and Logan where it was just Tom seeing absolute waffle. But not seeing anything but still making a point about something. And well, I mean, the pulse Unknown Speaker 4:51 here everything he was saying like Unknown Speaker 4:54 and can see exactly what he's trying to say but and it looks so pathetic or it's so funny at this Unknown Speaker 5:00 same time. I won't put it I started literally saying it out loud for him. I was like, It's okay. Use your words, just just just Unknown Speaker 5:10 be in and be in a beating around the bush, honestly. So yeah, like I said, it's it's written and directed by the super team of Jesse Armstrong and Mark Milo. I want to go through this character by character. So hopefully we can we can run through that quickly. But before we do all of that, while you guys general thoughts on the story, what did you think of return to succession, I thought it was a strong final return. Actually, I think it was good at re grounding you in what's happening in the show, it was good at telling you where everybody has every character's head is at it was good, and telling you Unknown Speaker 5:46 what every character's motivations are, in terms of what's happening in the show right now. It reminds you of the deals that are trying to be pushed through and what everybody wants from that deal or is trying to avoid from set deal. And it also shows you potential allies and enemies. So it's just like a good start to the season, I think it was actually done in such a way that if you didn't know anything about succession, before this season, you could come in and actually figure out who everyone is just from dialogue, and just go on to the final season. Because like, once they mentioned the kids, you know, you're aware that they haven't that they're not part of the current deal. Carrie is talking about them that she's talking to them on the phone, you can see that you know, they're not at the party, you can see that Connor is there, you can see that he's vying for presidents like everything you need to know about succession up to this point is recapped beautifully and naturally without anybody having to do much. And they still build new ground for what's coming in the in the final season. So yeah, genuinely, I feel like somebody who hasn't watched the series before would just be like, this is a good, this is a good story. I want to find out all the remaining context for this. Let me go and watch the previous episodes, it will be kind of just be like a, like a prequel of sorts. So I thought it was really strong in that way. Unknown Speaker 6:59 Yeah, I think for me, it's kind of like dropping somebody in the middle of the trading floor, in Wall Street or something. There was just so much going on, and just trying to find out, because you have an election year, and then you have Luke trying to sell the company, but he's still spinning a 10 off on his turkeys acquisition things. Everyone's busy. And they're trying to start this new, new company, but they're not really because they're trying to acquire this other media conglomerate. Oh, shit, what's going on what's going on? Like, kind of felt that Unknown Speaker 7:27 parent was a year now since since Unknown Speaker 7:33 just two months since the season three, finale dropped and I felt like that was last week, I still felt like I was still part of that. Universe. Enough. Nothing. That sounds interesting. Because I kind of felt I felt the difference. Really, I don't even remember what the new location was. I did a little bit too. I definitely felt the different add at least one point during the episode, I asked how much time was actually passed? Because it can you can feel that there has been a little bit of time. Like it's not like, you know, with Unknown Speaker 8:05 with like with scenes between season one and season two, for example, that happens like the next day. Yeah, but this didn't feel like that this fellow No, I'm at past now. This is definitely at least three months. Because they say it they say Unknown Speaker 8:17 lots of clarify about like time in the show. I meant like, season like I had watched the season finale last week, so it was still fresh. Like we're still gonna know. Yeah, I remember going with as well as personally, obviously, I was still fresh in my head. But I mean, I was like, it felt like a differentiate definitely for like a differential. But it felt different. To me, it felt like I think it was mainly because of the location chain because we invest in this place that they are in. So that's like a new location. It's a new dynamic that we've not really ever seen. So that it may feel differently, but not in a way that was like, definitely wasn't jarring. I'm not trying to say that we just I felt the difference of like this is and I think I was thinking about the last this is in three premiere. And I remember that we we were kind of like, I think was just it was a night that time we're kind of discussing as one episode and then actually took him on. We're like, Oh, this is this actually just two episodes. These are sorry, is that two parts of one episode? So I wonder if, like, the next doesn't have to to have this will feel or maybe maybe to and maybe there'll be new episode. Or maybe to feel like part two of this episode. I really like this episode. I Unknown Speaker 9:19 like it just earlier, it took me a while to get into it. I think just took me awhile to get into like the groove of everybody and everything. But let's talk about let's start with Logan. Let's start with the birthday boy. So just quickly for for our sake as podcasters. Let's just run until somebody comes and says this is not the case. Let's just run with the fact that it's been a year since the pilots are now so this is looking into first but let's just let's just use the issue. You want to do that? Unknown Speaker 9:44 Yeah, it's so much easier to understand. I think it's been two years or three like let's just use one year, right? So season one and two happened within like nine months and then it's been like three, four months since then. One year. Unknown Speaker 9:57 Okay, let's run with it. I remember feeling like me. Unknown Speaker 10:00 reaction when I saw Logan at this point, it was like, I just felt how lonely he was. If that makes sense, I'm like, Yeah, I think you immediately notice difference between this and his 80th birthday party, which is a lot smaller and has a family and has kids. Yeah, people that he, in his own way at least definitely cares about. And then here, it's just like random suits. Unknown Speaker 10:23 So everybody soaking up every time he turns the corner people are like, happy birthday. Like it's like this thing in the song on cue, like they're robots. It was so interesting. See how you reacted to that? Because it's so much symmetry between this and that perception? I thought it was very cool how they started the first season with his birthday and the ending and the starting the final season with their right so I like what you like, what you said is pretty much exactly what I was thinking how like, there are people around him, but he feels lonely. Now like he's still like them, he was definitely in control. He was so in control that he was seizing the control Kendall thought he had from him to add to his own control. Now he is in control, but he's not even sure of that control. Like it was so sad when he when he went to have like a burger or something with with Colin. And he's like, everybody's small, right? Um, the biggest I call it was calling supposed to say call it and it's just there to make sure you don't get shot. Literally, like calling is going to say everything you need to say and like even when call and tried to give an opinion. That was like even slightly real. He's like Nananana. So yeah, really. Unknown Speaker 11:32 I've never subscribed to the idea that Logan would die. Unknown Speaker 11:36 Yes. But I think that conversation with Colin is probably the greatest allusion to the evidence of him dire before the show. And when do you think it will happen before and they have to everybody left has to deal with it or will happen at the end? I think that's how the Sharon's because there's no way that he will be Unknown Speaker 11:56 the company. I mean, look, yeah, he can I think we can discuss that in particular as we go on in the season, because like, Unknown Speaker 12:05 will this show with a show that they're making end with one of the kids in charge? I don't really think so. I don't I think I don't think I've had to show in the existential questions. Carry on. That might be the case, if I feel like the only way the show can end is if the kids win. But Logan won't be around another one or something something. winnings. So okay. This is a quick detour. But what's winning to you then becoming CEO? Taking the company? Unknown Speaker 12:31 I don't know if this I don't know if this is that show? I don't know if this is a show about a butterfly. I think yeah, it's a butterfly. I don't think Unknown Speaker 12:39 that's not gonna be the full stop of the show. I don't think that's the show does do to sell Trump is trying to tell about like, I think they look deeper than that. Unknown Speaker 12:47 Yeah, it's all about trying to get approval of your, of your data. That's kind of why they want to Yeah, at the end of the day, but if it never get that approval, but they have done the sort of thing, which would have gotten an approval from the data that is not around the seeds. Because in that angle world, perhaps, but the thing is, truly rich people deal more in power than in money. The truth is, even though they've lost the company, or they are on the verge of losing the company, these guys are going to be really, really rich. I mean, they're like, I mean, at some other date, like I guess I'll go over like the whole corporate structure of this company. But essentially, these guys own the company that owns the company that owns we start, right? So no matter what happens, even though they're losing control, their pay day is going to be so big that they can actually do whatever the heck they want. Which is why I think it's so funny. So so so funny that in a world where they could already do whatever they wanted, and are given even more leeway and capital to do even more of whatever they want. They are still choosing to fight with daddy. Okay, well, hold on hold on to anything. We'll get to the kids in a second hold on to that let's let's let's finish with less than this we live a good Unknown Speaker 14:02 that conversation he has we call in it's kind of thing that like it doomed TV character always always says, Yeah, I like to call it death flux is like nothing tastes like it used to, like nothing is the same what's what's after all of this, and Unknown Speaker 14:17 I've been in that Collins position where you're like, I don't want to have this conversation with you. Like I'm not anything I say will sound dumb to you. You can hold that whole conversation we've had conversations with with people facing impending doom. Unknown Speaker 14:30 No. Well, I mean, one or two. Wow. But no, no, I mean, like, I've had conversations with people that like, I don't want to have a one on one conversation. And they asking me like questions that I don't have the answer to and I don't even want to discuss this with you. I'm just like, I'm just trying to do my job. Like I'm just here so I don't get fine. So Unknown Speaker 14:47 I can just like I really just didn't want to be here. Wow. But again, obviously we've started to play this last season. I give these guys so much credit the the creative team that I don't think like Unknown Speaker 15:00 They will telegraph Unknown Speaker 15:02 Logan's death that that like that strongly, so just just something that could I was like, Oh, this is it any other show this probably will be what someone is going to die we'll go through. Unknown Speaker 15:11 It's worth mentioning that you actually said like, it's the final season. We I mean, I believe we've said that. Yeah. I mean, I'll just, I'll take it that is just your hay fever. Unknown Speaker 15:24 But, yeah, obviously, if you're listening to this, I didn't notice I I've been quite impressed in your ability to detach from news. Yeah, the final scene, kind of like Sarah Snook. Actually, she she didn't learn that succession was ending until the final table read. Which, like, how did they do that? Unknown Speaker 15:43 What I mean, it's because I was there. I saw some pictures that she's pregnant, so congratulations to her. Oh, yeah. Anyone who doesn't know or remembers her Snoop police should Unknown Speaker 15:52 keep your thoughts to yourself. Unknown Speaker 15:57 As we finish up on like, normally, tissues end on five that's the sweet spot. Hi, right. from Indiana, where the person wants to initial I read this person wants to end it. Like yeah, we I thought we're gonna get five. Good. Good TV shows and love five to six. Unknown Speaker 16:16 So did six right. So this six year madman did seven? Like, yeah, most contagious? And I think like a Yeah, I think something like this. He's always telling a very finite finite turtle. Okay, look, we, I mean, he said it in his kind of outlet. He did the piece where he was like, Look, we can become a show that does maybe seven seasons, and some weeks are good, some are bad. But if we want to tell the story and keep the quality throughout, in our opinion, we kind of have to stop here. That's been he's been upfront. He didn't he didn't know it was gonna be the end. At all points. Like he went into the writers room and like, get I think this might be the end or somebody has medical try and convince me. And until like actually filming, it was like, Okay, I think this is where we're going to stop it. We can't really go anywhere else watch billions on Logan quickly. Is that final? Because my intention of that final scene is that he's going to be like a lot more focused on Etn. And that could explain obviously, he's seen in the trailer with where Greg says he's he's amazing. Like Santa was a hit. Yeah. Yes. So it might be that like he he takes ATM as his own pet project and tries to focus on that. And well, yeah, it was worth it. Because growing up was at a new core to that's the thing going is like going off. And because amazing take down. It makes sense that that's what it makes sense that that's what we're going to focus on, right because he believes in the strength of legacy media. And there's nothing more legacy that we start wounds than ATM, right? Except maybe parks but even then, you know, Etn is their big moneymaker. It's their big power wielder as well. Because that's how they control the zeitgeist. That's how they get. I think he's what he loves the most. That's why he loves it because he loves love's Unknown Speaker 17:59 personality. Same thing with like, I mean, we can we can kind of draw comparisons between Logan and a lot of people in our worlds, but the main one is Murdoch, right. So he actually just loves news, but he loves newspapers. And a lot of the stuff that he acquired in his early career was newspapers. And I think for Logan, it's not it's it's kind of kind of hinted to us that what he likes to get what he likes to use to, you know, wield control to kind of impress his own opinions on the world is TV shows he likes to buy local news stations, bigger news stations as well. We've seen him tried to like, why can't we own all the news? Well, Kim Jong Un Unknown Speaker 18:38 in this country. Yeah, literally like I think that was that was a very good way of the writers making that comparison without making that comparison. It was very obviously his love for PGn which we're gonna touch on in a second. Exactly. Unknown Speaker 18:50 You guys can see if you ever need to look up thoughts quickly, but I shouldn't say that roast me is the funniest thing I've seen on TV. Oh, yeah. Like that whole sequence. Had me dying every single section. Unknown Speaker 19:02 Like call be funny. Frank say something funny. I didn't expect Frank to actually speak but then he did the most Frank thing ever. And I was like, yeah, that actually makes sense. That we like who wants to spill Greg's finger. Yeah. And the fact that he went there because Logan can really be Spry when he wants to be you can tell the kind of person he was as a young man, because Bruce, I have to say I didn't expect Greg to step up to the plate was such a beam. Like he actually came with energy. You know, I thought he was gonna get like, I don't know, you know, punished in a very big way. But now looking just jogged back and it worked. Well, Uncle Logan well, your kids was your old man. Unknown Speaker 19:43 Still stuck in Cook County? Which I had. Let me just see. I had to think about that for a second. Okay, actually, Unknown Speaker 19:51 God, because at first you think okay, is he talking about his brother but no, you didn't realize that it's a Greg's dad probably be Unknown Speaker 20:00 because we've never actually no no is is definitely good. Caroline says, Uh, yeah, she says that she says it at one point. We've never actually seen him in the show. So everybody knows that Greg. Unknown Speaker 20:11 Oh my goodness. Says he was like the village slaughter was good for all the men. Oh, Lady Carlin's had in season one. Okay. Okay, let's quickly talk about the kids. My first question on the weekends that go into everything is, is Roman making sense? Out of center out of fear? What do you okay, let me start with you. What do you what do you think? What do you mean? Like Roman is making sense in this in this situation? He's making more sense. Yes, he was. Yeah, he kind of surprised me. Why is it because it's just like moderate or is it actual legit logic? Is it just afraid of good batteries? Or is it just is that I think he actually really believed in this athletic thing that tried to start you calling it was the one thing that gives me analytical is the one that keeps you alive. So Unknown Speaker 20:59 the greatest writers like this is the athletic guy. He gets to keep Unknown Speaker 21:04 this on top of like the cameo in TED last year last week. Unknown Speaker 21:10 Yeah. Unknown Speaker 21:11 Oh my God, I feel like he actually will be able to do that. But gonna come here until so. Yeah, so that's so so Unknown Speaker 21:21 I actually think like He actually believed in this funny enough to pursue this and go ahead offense and everything. But Unknown Speaker 21:30 that would be nice person by Florida's liberal temp says that was like, I mean, PS is up. And you just need someone to sort of nudge him to which are the two obviously can do and, and shift to kind of like margin to say, Okay, this is actually too good of an opportunity to go for it right now. So although I feel like he was level headed edge, probably the most rational of all the kids, which is wild. Unknown Speaker 21:59 I do feel like those little bits in that in him that wanted to go for it. He just needed somebody to it's kind of like that meme if you run out. Exactly. Yeah. Unknown Speaker 22:11 He just kind of water when he goes in. He's like, Yeah, obviously. I wanted, it'd be I think you have thoughts on this deal. So that Unknown Speaker 22:20 that man is full of trepidation from Unknown Speaker 22:23 that guy is so afraid, because it's like, there's a part of him. That's wondering, how much more can this man hurt us? Because he's already trying to take away our inheritance, right? And then with help from mom, that's basically done and dusted. So now what if we try and go against him, and we fail, and he comes for us again, he's like, Okay, now I'm going to take the little that I left you with, I'm going to find a way to make you suffer. Like there's a part of him that's feeling that we will also I think maybe there's a part of Roman that's like, let me just break away from this. I think maybe he's the only person. He's the only one of them that's realized, what if I could be doing something else other than like, you know, standing in dad's shadow and screaming at the little people underneath? You know, what did there's something better? What if there's a higher calling, maybe I can just have my own thing, even if it feels who cares? I'm still rich, like I can still have my own like, like, it's always Jerry like, I have my own private private army and then islands like that kind of rich and then we can just be a team though. Again, I'm wondering what their interactions this season are going to be like, are they even still talk on the phone or anything like that right now? So I think I think Roman is kind of being cautious out of mainly fear but also because he's he's kind of starting to think outside of the box a little bit. I think Kendall probably doesn't care as much like Kendall is now at a point where he's so jaded. That like he's not emotionally invested. He's just like, you know, we could go for this and it's gonna work we have the investors lined up whatever just because of our names it will come through but he's a unit or handle has an established dad. Let's go Yeah, sorry. There's only 30 but Kendall is basically living on borrowed time. Yeah, but all of this is an extra life seems like you know what, fuck it like I died and I came back to life and now whatever happens happens like an empty man, kind of like Thorfinn in season two of Vinland saga but also kind of also like in a in a hopeful way. He's not like he's not the show that he was in season two. He's almost like okay, and it's funny that he wasn't sitting for what we know about Jeremy Strong's acting which is well documented acts in method which again i Unknown Speaker 24:31 i can i can imagine that humans have been great fun on the set this this few weeks, because Kendall is just free Unknown Speaker 24:41 Okay, so I just quickly I really liked that the Roman says, I come up with the words before I was like, do we want to go back and fight with dad and go back in that room? Exactly like you do. He's the only person that alludes to like the season finale and I just really liked that because cloud stupid on his mind three or four months later. Okay. Unknown Speaker 25:00 So I have two questions for you guys. Unknown Speaker 25:04 Obviously object we have the objective view we know that they overpaid. Right? But my question is one does that matter? And to how much is like how much does a knife in Logans hearts cost? Like what is the what is the price on but before I actually answer that question, I love Unknown Speaker 25:25 the culprit language in this in the show so much. It's like when Nam Paris was like wash. When was it in Paris came out and she's having a headache. Oh Naomi does Naomi Unknown Speaker 25:38 is having a headache. It's like what does that mean? It's not about numbers. Unknown Speaker 25:44 Even when she came out and she was trying to essentially say, yeah, that number will work. We need a bigger one. Do you know how many words she used? Unknown Speaker 25:51 Like eight Unknown Speaker 25:53 eight or nine a Roman is like Unknown Speaker 25:57 Robin was so funny because I love rivers. Unknown Speaker 26:00 I love that scene so much. Because she's like, this sounds like he didn't walk and it's like dark. Unknown Speaker 26:06 Terry Jones is so good because like these guys we've worked for seasons or three seasons on an episode, but like you can see right through her bullshit like You're like you're just you're not the liberal city like you don't act like you don't care about this. What's your like, what your finances what I understand and I was like, fuck you. Unknown Speaker 26:26 My workplace Unknown Speaker 26:28 workplaces. He used to do that a lot. So he was like, explain to me, I don't really understand this technical stuff. It was quite higher. Just explained to me something I think it just like, like stop playing games. Unknown Speaker 26:40 They came with what the company was like, it's like, in the middle of a bidding was like Man, she's like, you like the money Unknown Speaker 26:49 what she said was, I don't want to be in the middle of a bidding war. And I screamed out loud I kid you not? You are this is a bidding war actually. Unknown Speaker 26:59 Wow, nine peers. Unknown Speaker 27:03 Okay, so I'll be honest about that. Because that's not the question. Does it matter? Are they overpaid? Oh, Unknown Speaker 27:09 no, two way let me know. Because the way I'm thinking of it, because I knew I knew when people want this episode, we're gonna be like, Oh, the kids are so stupid. They overpaid like a terrible business I think which is whatever my point is, that doesn't matter that you overpaid. Does that is not an indictment. It doesn't it doesn't matter anyway, doesn't matter because election coming up. Unknown Speaker 27:30 And I think them having them having their own weapon in public space could be really really helpful in terms of oh my god, you know Unknown Speaker 27:43 that, like this election thing, this election thing is really, really big. Like we saw just a little snippet of it this episode, but I feel like that's going to be massive plot points going forward. And this is Unknown Speaker 27:57 interesting, because if Yeah, if you have their own weapon against dad, I just have a you know, you have your own kind of liberal today, basically having watched Fox versus CNBC and whatever but yeah, MSN said that they are not liberal at all, except maybe Schiff. Unknown Speaker 28:18 Yeah, but like for them, politics is only where we can put like, what what helps you the best, the most? I mean, I think she kind of worried that. I don't know if we can Unknown Speaker 28:29 analyze ships politics right now. We are at a time where she wants to do she's not really she's she's liberal. Definitely. And I think her instincts are to react to the things that, like, will make our culture pearls. But then probably in the end magazine during that in the election, election, the politics of the last season, she's clearly against Justin Quikscribe. She doesn't like what he's saying. But then we're like, when push comes to shove, would you still be a bit worried? As I said the question, what do you think to do about pay doesn't matter? How much does a knife Lukens heart cost? Unknown Speaker 29:01 Okay, here's the thing, right? When the original number was rejected, Unknown Speaker 29:07 in my head, I was like, this should go to 12. And the reason I thought they should go to 12. Yeah. Because Unknown Speaker 29:14 the reason I thought they should go to 12 was because if they were trying to make a point to Logan, that would have been the best way to do it. Also, because it shows them that it shows everybody involved. And even those not involved that they are as serious as Logan initially was, because Logan in season two was going to pay 21.5 I forgot about. That's why I thought about it.
