Cover Stories

This week we have co-founder of blog 'Creative Socialite', Jamie Barrientos talking about Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of “Higher Ground”, originally by Stevie Wonder.

Show Notes

We talk about being introduced to the song from the Power Rangers movie, the significance of RHCP covering the song and how it transitioned RHCP’s sound. We discuss the genius of John Frusciante, defend the Dave Navarro/One Hot Minute era RHCP and dive into their feud with Mike Patton. We bring up how even with his acclaim, Stevie Wonder is still underrated and some of what inspired him to write “Higher Ground,” and briefly talk about the case of RHCP gentrifying funk music but also paying homage. We dive into the Chilli Pepper’s discography and how it both affected and was effected by pop radio in the aughts and how they evolved sonically and their legacy today.

We digress into the state of live music today, trade some SXSW/Warped Tour stories and Jamie reflects on some of his experience working with Sinclair Broadcasting and IHeartRadio.
