Icon Church Sermons

Here in Week 3 of our mini-series looking at God and how his character affects our mental health, we look at shame.

Each one of us is living in a story. As humans, we find purpose and significance based off of the story that we think we are living into. Shame recognizes this, and is seeking to tell you a story, and it’s one of the most destructive narratives you can embrace. This week, we’ll see how shame’s story is dehumanizing, isolating, and perpetuates the sins we hate. But the grace of God is able to undo this narrative, interrupting it with a new word and a decisive story of freedom and safe vulnerability.

Show Notes

Pre-2020, life in America was riddled by a mental health epidemic. In steps COVID-19. Now, mental health experts say that the rate of those admitting to mental health issues are higher than ever. And so, we must ask: does the God of the Bible have anything to say to such a wave of darkness and struggle? Can he offer any actual help that goes beyond platitudes and cliches? The answer is yes, and we’re going to explore how in this midweek series. We’ll take a real look at struggles such as depression, anxiety, or addiction, and see some specific characteristics of God that are able to bring real and significant help on the road to wholeness.
