आतपत्रपादत्राणयोः उद्भवः

ग्रीष्मकालः आसीत् । महर्षिः जमदग्निः सूर्यतापस्य तीक्ष्णतां न्यूनीकर्तुं पत्न्या रेणुकादेव्या धनुम् आनाय्य सूर्यम् उद्दिश्य एकैकशः बाणानां प्रक्षेपणं अकरोत् । किन्तु भास्करः तथैव ज्वलन् स्थितवान् । महर्षेः क्रोधः पराकाष्ठां गतः । एतदभ्यन्तरे सूर्यदेवः विप्रवेषधारी भूत्वा महर्षिम् उपेत्य एतस्मात् यत्नात् विरमयितुं वदति । यदा महर्षिः एतत् न अङ्गीकरोति तदा सूर्यदेवः स्वस्य दिव्यशक्त्या आतपत्रं, पादत्राणं च सृष्ट्वा तस्मै महर्षये अदात् । इत्थम् आदिमयोः आतपत्रपादत्राणयोः उद्भवः जातः । वैशाखमासे श्राद्धवेलायां च आतपत्रस्य पादत्राणस्य च दानम् इत्थम् आरब्धम् ।

It was summer. The sage Jamadagni, to reduce the intensity of the sun's heat, brought a bow with the help of his wife Renuka and started shooting arrows towards the sun. However, the sun continued to blaze. The sage's anger reached its peak. In the meantime, the sun god, disguised as a Brahmin, approached the sage and tried to stop him. When the sage did not agree, the sun god used his divine power to create an umbrella and sandals and gave them to the sage. Thus, the origin of the first umbrella and sandals came into being. This is why, during the Shraadha in the month of Vaishakha, the donation of umbrellas and sandals began.
