Pop quiz: who was the first evangelist in the New Testament? If we look at the root meaning of the word “evangelist,” we could make a case for the first one being the angel who announced good news to a group of startled shepherds. But Luke portrays the shepherds—lowly people who didn’t have a shred of social status—as the first humans to proclaim the good news about Jesus. That’s not to say they were conscious of their role or had a ministry strategy; they just couldn’t help telling others about what they had seen and heard.
