Joseph's story begins a few chapters before his famous childhood dreams.

Jacobs wives, Rachel and Leah, compete in some "competitive childbearing" that echoes all the conflict between Jacob and his brother Esau. This beginning of Joseph's story has many strange details and may help us understand this character that will dominate the remainder of Genesis.
