to be obedient to God together. 00:01:35.300 --> 00:01:40.780 So the parable that we are going to look at this morning is the parable of the wise and 00:01:40.780 --> 00:01:41.980 the foolish builder. 00:01:42.500 --> 00:01:47.120 And it's important that we know that, like every parable that we've talked about in this 00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:50.140 series, the context in which Jesus gives this parable. 00:01:50.680 --> 00:01:56.140 This parable that Jesus shares is at the very beginning of his earthly ministry. 00:01:56.680 --> 00:01:59.080 All right, so Jesus has been out doing some stuff. 00:01:59.620 --> 00:02:04.500 Matthew chapter 4 tells us that Jesus had been going into the synagogues and teaching. 00:02:05.020 --> 00:02:07.560 It tells us that he had been out proclaiming the gospel. 00:02:08.120 --> 00:02:13.500 And so that from the, whether it's in the synagogue, whether it's out into the streets, the message 00:02:13.500 --> 00:02:18.180 that Jesus is teaching is different than any message that they've heard before. 00:02:18.760 --> 00:02:22.540 You know, Jesus is surrounded by religious people. 00:02:23.140 --> 00:02:27.560 Jesus is surrounded by a people who has, it's been ingrained in them of what to do. 00:02:27.880 --> 00:02:32.160 But as Jesus comes and shares something, it's a new message that they're not familiar with. 00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:39.560 But then it also tells us that Jesus has been already performing miracles, that Jesus has 00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:40.600 been healing people. 00:02:41.040 --> 00:02:46.580 And so what is beginning to happen very early on in the stages of Jesus's life, that there's 00:02:46.580 --> 00:02:51.360 this large gathering that surrounds Jesus whenever he goes somewhere. 00:02:51.860 --> 00:02:57.980 In that group that is surrounding with Jesus, there's the group of people who were his disciples. 00:02:58.440 --> 00:03:03.060 Jesus has already started to call that close group that's going to follow him. 00:03:03.400 --> 00:03:07.480 There's another group, while they're not in that inner circle, but they've committed their 00:03:07.480 --> 00:03:11.100 lives to seeking after Christ and they're following him as well. 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:16.680 But an interesting dynamic that we also find in this group that follows Jesus is there's 00:03:16.680 --> 00:03:20.620 the skeptics, there's the critics, and there's the curious. 00:03:21.580 --> 00:03:26.600 So even as Jesus goes, right, they've heard stories of the things that Jesus has taught. 00:03:27.100 --> 00:03:31.420 They've maybe even been in the synagogue when Jesus begins to teach and they think, wait a 00:03:31.420 --> 00:03:34.020 minute, that's different than what all the other teachers are saying. 00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:37.540 They've heard about the miracles that he's performed. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:45.480 And so they too begin to follow Jesus, not necessarily to follow him and surrender their life, but find ourselves at the beginning of Matthew chapter 5 is Jesus 00:04:02.300 --> 00:04:07.640 is on the side of a hill and he looks around and he sees that the crowd is great around 00:04:07.640 --> 00:04:08.000 him. 00:04:08.620 --> 00:04:13.660 And so Jesus sits down and he begins to give the Sermon on the Mount. 00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:19.980 And at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, the longest recorded sermon in Scripture that 00:04:19.980 --> 00:04:27.960 Jesus gives, he does like a lot of teachers or communicators or pastors do, he ends it with 00:04:27.960 --> 00:04:28.580 a story. 00:04:29.540 --> 00:04:31.880 And it's the parable that we're going to look at this morning. 00:04:32.540 --> 00:04:35.880 And so let's look at Matthew 7 starting in verse 24. 00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:44.280 Jesus concludes this long sermon with this, everyone then who hears these words of mine and does 00:04:44.280 --> 00:04:50.580 not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the rock and the rain fell 00:04:50.580 --> 00:04:56.680 and the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall 00:04:56.680 --> 00:04:59.720 because it had been founded to be blessed. 00:05:37.980 --> 00:05:40.360 They've all heard him talk about retaliation. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:47.560 Regardless if they're a committed disciple or they're a distant skeptic, everyone who has 00:05:47.560 --> 00:05:55.240 come and sat on the side of this hill and listened to the words of Jesus have all heard the exact 00:05:55.240 --> 00:05:56.980 same thing. 00:05:57.540 --> 00:06:07.060 And so Jesus begins to tell a story about two men who find themselves in the exact same situation, 00:06:07.460 --> 00:06:17.760 who find themselves with the exact same knowledge, but choose to do something different based off of 00:06:17.760 --> 00:06:20.320 the same information. 00:06:21.620 --> 00:06:27.420 And so Jesus says, as you've all sat here and as you've all heard these words of mine, 00:06:28.300 --> 00:06:29.500 it's like two builders. 00:06:30.860 --> 00:06:37.460 One builder who builds his house and builds his house on the rock and the storms would come, 00:06:37.980 --> 00:06:39.680 but the house would stand. 00:06:40.380 --> 00:06:45.940 But there's a foolish builder and the foolish builder does not build his house on the rock. 00:06:46.040 --> 00:06:52.360 Instead, he builds his house on the sand and the wind comes and the rain comes and the floods come. 00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:56.100 The same one that came to the other and his house falls. they have been told and they have commanded to do. 00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:15.640 And what we begin to find in this parable of what Jesus teaches is that when the storms come, 00:07:15.640 --> to happen in our life is the storms of life are going to reveal the quality of the work 00:07:34.940 --> 00:07:41.580 of the foundation in which the house or the life is built on. 00:07:42.300 --> 00:07:45.540 So let's understand this story that Jesus tells. 00:07:46.320 --> 00:07:49.940 One says one built on the rock, one says one built on the sand. 00:07:50.260 --> 00:07:51.060 Well, here's the truth. 00:07:51.400 --> 00:07:53.760 When you would look at both of the houses, 00:07:53.760 --> 00:07:58.200 they both would appear to having been built on the sand. 00:07:58.320 --> 00:08:02.760 So let's talk about this sand in the Middle East and the area in which Jesus lives. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:06.580 We're not thinking about sand like I have in my backyard. 00:08:06.760 --> 00:08:11.860 You know, one of the things about living in Lexington is depending on what side of Lexington you live, 00:08:11.920 --> 00:08:15.720 right, you either have clay that's impossible to dig through, 00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:19.900 or you have sand, which is very easy to dig through, right? 00:08:20.020 --> 00:08:22.300 Now, I have sand at my house. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:27.480 And so when it comes time to dig, it's very, very easy to dig through that sand. 00:08:27.720 --> 00:08:30.760 That's not the sand that Jesus talks about here. 00:08:31.220 --> 00:08:37.140 The sand that Jesus talks about here is desert sand that experiences floods. 00:08:38.040 --> 00:08:41.180 Well, when the floodwaters would come and mix with the sand, 00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:46.140 and then the sun would begin to bake on the sand, guess what would happen? 00:08:46.540 --> 00:08:50.120 That sand would turn into almost like concrete. 00:08:50.180 --> 00:08:57.140 If you're here with us at church, almost like the tile floor that you guys are sitting on today, 00:08:57.400 --> 00:09:01.740 that level of hardness would be the level what the sand would be. 00:09:01.800 --> 00:09:03.840 So you're there, and you're going to build your house. 00:09:04.100 --> 00:09:05.100 Well, you have to make a choice. 00:09:06.060 --> 00:09:08.900 Do I choose to dig through the sand? 00:09:09.660 --> 00:09:13.060 Do I choose to get out my tools that are possibly going to break? 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:17.940 Do I choose to go through the back-breaking work in order to get the firm foundation? 00:09:18.160 --> work, and one man chooses to do it his way. 00:09:30.520 --> 00:09:32.700 Well, what would happen during this time is, like we said, 00:09:32.740 --> 00:09:34.880 it would be common to rain, be common to flood. 00:09:34.880 --> 00:09:39.520 This area that Jesus was speaking in, that people would understand, would have been in a valley. 00:09:40.600 --> 00:09:46.580 And so what you and I would consider a light rain, but it would rain over time. 00:09:47.260 --> 00:09:50.300 And not only would the rain that fell from the sky land there, 00:09:50.400 --> 00:09:54.440 but the rain that would come into the mountains would channel and would funnel. 00:09:54.720 --> 00:10:01.400 And what at one point in time looked like dry land would all of a sudden become like a river. 00:10:01.940 --> 00:10:09.300 And what would happen is that hard, packed-down sand that felt like concrete would now turn into mush. 00:10:10.020 --> 00:10:14.580 And the house that was built on the sand would blow away. 00:10:15.220 --> 00:10:20.660 And so what we begin to see is that Jesus says, look, there's one man who does it the wise way, 00:10:20.780 --> 00:10:23.300 who does it the way that he's been told to do. 00:10:23.440 --> 00:10:31.020 But there's another man who does it his own way, who does it the way that he wants to. 00:10:31.680 --> 00:10:37.560 So Jesus looks at this group of people at --> 00:11:00.460 It's important for us to know Jesus both defines wisdom and foolishness in this passage of Scripture. 00:11:01.060 --> 00:11:07.120 You see, for Jesus, wisdom is knowledge and obedience. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:11.560 For so many of us, we think that wisdom is just knowing something. 00:11:11.560 --> 00:11:15.000 Well, if I know this, then that makes me wise. 00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:21.040 But when it comes to biblical application of Scripture and what God is calling us to, 00:11:21.420 --> 00:11:23.800 wisdom is more than just knowing. 00:11:24.180 --> 00:11:28.820 Jesus says, no, no, no, wisdom is about knowing these words of mine 00:11:28.820 --> 00:11:35.800 and putting them into practice like the wise man who built his house on the rock. 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:40.540 But then Jesus also defines foolishness. 00:11:41.180 --> 00:11:45.240 You see, there's a difference between foolishness and ignorance 00:11:45.240 --> 00:11:52.120 because foolishness is knowing but being disobedient. 00:11:53.040 --> 00:11:58.080 Jesus says, but the foolish man is the one who hears the words of mine 00:11:58.080 --> 00:12:01.800 and doesn't put them into practice. --> 00:16:13.040 And it's going to speak against our culture. 00:16:13.800 --> 00:16:15.420 And it's going to speak against, 00:16:15.680 --> 00:16:16.920 for so many of us, 00:16:17.080 -->
