High Voltage Business Builders Podcast

Stop renting your rank. 39.6% TACOS is profitable for our brand. 30% is the milestone. 20% is the goal.

Show Notes

Amazon is the landlord. I am paying rent for my spot on the page. Stop paying, and our sales vanish. Most sellers are renting their rank. They do not own it. I want to show you how to shift from renting to owning. I was looking at the numbers of our new home brand in the home niche that we just launched in Voltage. In the first 8 days we made $6,011 in sales on 37 sets, and we moved into profit before day 7. Our TACOS sat at 39.6%. That is profitable for our brand. 30% is even more profitable, a milestone we chase. But the goal for most brands is 20%. At 20%, organic ranking brings in the profits. By November 4, ad spend was $2,383, ROAS was 2.37x, and 94% of sales came from ads with only 6% organic. Our break-even TACOS is 42.6%, and we are below it. In the last 5 days we made $401 in net profit, a 6.7% margin, or $10.85 net per set. Profit before ads was $69.26 per set, and ad cost was $58.42 per set. The targeting split shows where the bleed is: auto close-match won at 32% ACoS, substitutes ran at 8% ACoS, top of search leaked at 53% ACoS on 68% of spend, and loose-match was 89% ACoS. We are cutting that loose-match waste and stepping down the top of search. The move is simple. Optimize the listing first. Let the ads do the heavy lifting early. Then step them down as your organic rank rises. That is how you step TACOS down the ladder from 39.6% toward 30%, and then toward 20%. That is how you own your rank. Then do the Voltage 3. Launch a listing that converts before you scale ads. Check your listing conversion rate is strong before you increase ad spend. Use ads to buy rank, then step them down as organic takes over. Check your organic rank is rising while your ad spend is dropping. Build a Black Friday checklist in this order: listing, ads, inventory. Check your listing, ads, and inventory are all checked off before Black Friday. Do all three before tomorrow's episode.
