Residents in Sitka have been without internet service for five days due to a break in an underwater fiber optic cable. A repair ship from Seattle is expected to arrive by the end of the week, but repairs could take up to six days. While voice and text services have been restored, internet, TV, and mobile data remain down. Starlink satellite connections are being used as a temporary solution. 

Republican Matthew Salisbury and Alaskan Independence Party candidate John Wayne Howe, both of whom received just over 1% of the vote in the primary, will move on to Alaska's U.S. House general election in November. They join Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola and Republican Nick Begich as the top four candidates under Alaska’s open primary system. 

New statewide test results show that most Alaska students are struggling to meet proficiency in English and math, with only 32% scoring proficient or better. Despite lowered testing standards, proficiency levels remain low compared to pre-pandemic scores. Efforts are underway to support students in reading and expand career and technical education options. 

The Anchorage Police Department is purchasing a virtual reality (VR) system to enhance officer training, focusing on de-escalation techniques. The VR system is designed to provide realistic and immersive tactical training for police officers.
