अश्रुतपूर्वा कथा

कश्चन धूर्तः काणः अधिकं धनं सम्पादयितुम् एकम् उपायं करोति । 'यदि कश्चन अश्रुतपूर्वां कथां वदति तर्हि तस्मै वंशागतं सुवर्णपात्रं ददामि । यदि कथा श्रुतपूर्वा स्यात् तर्हि तेन एव मह्यं पञ्चशतं दीनाराः दातव्याः' इति घोषणं कारितवान् । बहवः जनाः कथाः श्रावितवन्तः । अन्ते श्रुतपूर्वा कथा एषा इति उक्त्वा तेभ्यः पञ्चशतं दीनारान् प्राप्नोति स्म । कदाचित् एकः‌ चतुरः युवकः आगत्य 'भवान् स्मरसि खलु भवतः पित्रा मम पित्रे पञ्चलक्षदीनाराः दातव्याः सन्ति  इति ......? यदि एषा कथा श्रुतपूर्वा तर्हि तान् दीनारान् मह्यं ददातु । यदि अश्रुतपूर्वा तर्हि सुवर्णपात्रं ददातु' इति । तस्य चातुर्येण काणः निरुत्तरः जातः ।

A cunning one-eyed man devised a scheme to earn money. He announced, "If someone tells me a story I have never heard before, I will give them my ancestral golden vessel. If the story is familiar, they must pay me 500 dinars". Many people narrated stories, but he always claimed to have heard them before and collected the money. One day, a clever young man approached him and said, "Do you remember that your father owed my father 500,000 dinars? If you have heard this before, pay me the amount. If not, give me the golden vessel". Trapped by the young man's wit, the one-eyed man was left speechless.

What is बालमोदिनी?
