अज्ञानं दुःखकारकम्

कस्मिंश्चित् वने कश्चित् तक्षकः वृक्षान् कर्तयित्वा, तान् ज्वालयित्वा, कृष्णाङ्गारान् निर्माय विक्रयणं करोति स्म । गच्छता कालेन वनं समाप्तं गतम् । तक्षकः नृपेण मिलित्वा स्वसमस्यां यदा निवेदितवान् तदा राजा महानगरात् बहिः रक्षितं स्वचन्दनवनं तक्षकाय दत्तवान् । चन्दवृक्षस्य मूल्यम् अजानन् सः तक्षकः पूर्ववत् तान् दग्ध्वा कृष्णाङ्गाराणां निर्माणं कृत्वा विक्रयणम् अकरोत् । राजा तस्य अज्ञानं ज्ञात्वा चन्दनखण्डमेकं विक्रेतुम् उक्तवान् । दशसहस्रपरिमितं मूल्यं यदा लब्धं तदा एव तस्य मूल्यं कियत् इति तक्षकः अवागमत् ।

In a forest, a carpenter chopped down trees, set them on fire, made charcoal, and sold them. Over time, the forest was completely depleted. When the carpenter told the king about his problem, the king gave him a sandalwood forest outside the city to use. The carpenter, unaware of the value of sandalwood, again burned the trees to make charcoal. The king, realizing the carpenter's ignorance, asked him to sell a single piece of sandalwood. When the carpenter received ten thousand coins for it, he understood the true value of the wood.
