It's that within us, even though we know the right thing to do, even though we desire to 00:06:02.100 --> 00:06:06.580 do the right thing, there's still that peace in us that wants to pull us back draw from and what we can see from Scripture is that there's no more death. 00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:38.480 So the pain and the suffering and the hurt that comes from the fact that these bodies are --> 00:07:44.280 But because of the brokenness in which we live in and the brokenness in which our world is set, 00:07:44.380 --> 00:07:47.420 even though God promises to never leave us or forsake us, 00:08:00.980 there becomes points and times in our walk with the Lord where He feels absent and we feel far from Him, 00:08:01.820 --> 00:08:03.160 even though that's not reality. 00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:08.840 But what we have the hope is God is there in the newness of relationship. 00:08:09.240 --> 00:08:11.460 There's no distance within there. 00:08:11.880 --> 00:08:15.040 And so there's the hope that we have of eternity, 00:08:15.320 --> 00:08:20.460 but even more so as we look to the reality of where we are now, 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:25.420 we want to look at the fact that salvation in Christ makes us new. 00:08:25.860 --> 00:08:27.040 So what we're going to do this morning, 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:33.160 we're going to try to work through pretty much all of John chapter 4, which is start reading in John chapter 4, verse 1. 00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:58.440 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John, 00:08:58.660 --> 00:09:02.660 although Jesus Himself did not baptize, but only His disciples, 00:09:03.300 --> 00:09:06.420 He left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 00:09:06.840 --> 00:09:08.960 And He had had to pass through Samaria. 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:15.880 So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the field that Jacob had given to His son Joseph. 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:17.860 And Jacob's well was there. 00:09:18.420 --> 00:09:26.500 So Jesus, wearied as He was from His journey, was sitting beside the well, and it was about the sixth hour. 00:09:27.020 --> 00:09:29.360 And a woman from Samaria came to draw water. 00:09:29.880 --> 00:09:31.180 And Jesus said to her, 00:09:31.660 --> 00:09:32.460 Give me a drink. 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:36.200 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 00:09:36.740 --> 00:09:38.580 And the Samaritan woman said to Him, 00:09:38.580 --> 00:09:44.280 How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? 00:09:44.640 --> 00:09:47.780 For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 00:09:48.140 --> 00:09:49.540 And Jesus answered her, 00:09:49.880 --> 00:09:55.480 If you knew the gift of God and who it is 00:10:02.520 The woman said to Him, 00:10:02.520 --> 00:10:05.780 Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. 00:10:06.300 --> 00:10:08.460 Where do you get that living water? 00:10:08.980 --> 00:10:11.000 Are you greater than our father Jacob? 00:10:11.460 --> 00:10:16.160 He gave us the well and drank from it Himself, as did His sons and His livestock. 00:10:16.680 --> 00:10:17.900 And Jesus said to her, 00:10:18.280 --> 00:10:21.880 Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. 00:10:21.880 --> 00:10:27.440 But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. 00:10:27.820 --> 00:10:35.080 The water I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. 00:10:35.740 --> 00:10:36.880 And the woman said to Him, 00:10:36.880 --> 00:10:43.780 Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water. 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:51.920 Well, what we're going to look at this morning are three different things that Christ gives us in newness from our relationship with Him. 00:10:52.020 --> 00:10:58.180 That we can see from His interactions with the Samaritan woman of three different pieces as we work through all of this. 00:10:58.460 --> 00:11:04.100 And the first thing that in a relationship with Christ of what Jesus provides for us is new water. 00:11:04.900 --> 00:11:06.240 Jesus gives us new water. 00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:14.280 Now, verse 9 is a key verse for us to understand what is happening here and what Jesus is doing. 00:11:14.760 --> 00:11:21.500 So Jesus asked this woman for a drink of water as He's there during the heat of the day. 00:11:21.500 --> 00:11:23.560 And remember, He's traveling. 00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:25.560 He's not traveling in His car. 00:11:25.660 --> 00:11:26.820 He's not traveling on a plane. 00:11:26.900 --> 00:11:27.660 He's not traveling on a train. 00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:28.980 They are walking. 00:11:29.740 --> 00:11:34.640 And during the heat of the day, during the desert area which they find themselves, 00:11:34.920 --> 00:11:38.000 He is very hot and He asks her, 00:11:38.640 --> 00:11:41.940 Could you give me some water? 00:11:42.360 --> 00:11:50.880 And then her response to Him in verse 9 kind of lays the groundwork for all that's going to happen and unfold 00:11:50.980 --> 00:11:53.040 over the course of this interaction. 00:11:53.040 --> 00:11:53.700 It says, 00:11:53.700 --> 00:11:55.300 The Samaritan woman said to Him, 00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:02.400 How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? 00:12:02.580 --> 00:12:06.180 For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 00:12:06.260 --> 00:12:12.640 So it's key for us to kind of understand the dynamic of what has brought them into this place 00:12:12.640 --> 00:12:20.340 where a woman who's hot, someone who's thirsty and you're drawing water and they're asking for some 00:12:20.340 --> 00:12:25.200 while her response to Jesus is neither rude or inappropriate. 00:12:25.920 --> 00:12:27.960 It's culturally fitting. 00:12:29.640 --> 00:12:34.060 And it's not because of her that brings her to this point. 00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:42.700 You see, the Samaritans were descendants of how they were viewed from the Israelites as descendants of the Assyrians. 00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:51.820 The Assyrians had captured Samaria, which at the time Samaria was in the northern kingdom of Israel around 722 B.C. 00:12:51.820 --> 00:13:03.220 And when the Assyrians captured Samaria, the Assyrians removed all Israelites of power and of influence and they deported them. 00:13:03.560 --> 00:13:07.100 They sent them off and they claimed this is going to be our city. 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:10.680 But they didn't deport all of the Israelites. 00:13:11.140 --> 00:13:12.480 They left some there. 00:13:13.240 --> 00:13:20.920 And so then the Assyrians and the Jews that were left behind over generation to generation continued to marry. 00:13:21.300 --> 00:13:23.780 And as they would marry, they would have children. 00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:31.140 And what you had was this different race was formed and was created, the race of the Samaritans. 00:13:31.140 --> 00:13:38.260 Now, the Jews viewed the Samaritans at extremely low levels. 00:13:38.680 --> 00:13:42.160 Their view of the Samaritans were based off of two things. 00:13:42.980 --> 00:13:50.700 During a time where race was emphasized, they were considered to be racially unclean. 00:13:51.360 --> 00:13:54.440 A mixed race, not purely Jewish. 00:13:54.960 --> 00:14:01.780 But they were also, and probably even more prominently, considered religiously unclean. 00:14:01.780 --> 00:14:04.480 You see, they had a mixed faith. 00:14:05.340 --> 00:14:16.720 The pagan Assyrian practices that came in with the Assyrians had mixed also with the Jewish practices that were there. 00:14:17.240 --> 00:14:21.040 And so what was left was this divide that was there. 00:14:21.300 --> 00:14:26.540 So she's kind of interacting culturally with what should be expected. 00:14:26.820 --> 00:14:38.240 She says to Jesus, why are you, a pure Jewish man, talking to me, an unclean Samaritan woman? 00:14:39.720 --> 00:14:46.980 As the nature and dynamic has determined for them in that setting of what is clean and what is not. 00:14:47.900 --> 00:14:55.540 But in the hope and the beauty of the gospel, what we're going to see is we're not talking about a racial impurity because there is no such thing. 00:14:56.380 --> 00:15:01.120 We're talking about a spiritual impurity that Jesus is going to bring with new water. 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.720 And so Jesus answers her in verse 10. 00:15:03.720 --> 00:15:15.240 And he says, if you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. 00:15:15.900 --> 00:15:21.920 Now I can imagine, like, hearing this concept of living water is kind of like the whole Jack and the Beanstalk thing, right? 00:15:22.560 --> 00:15:23.280 Like, what are you talking about? 00:15:23.660 --> 00:15:24.860 Living water. 00:15:25.260 --> 00:15:35.340 But what Jesus is doing is letting her know as she responds correctly based off of culture to what any man would have said to her. 00:15:35.340 --> 00:15:36.720 It's like, hold up, time out. 00:15:36.880 --> 00:15:39.440 I'm not like any other man that you've engaged with. 00:15:40.620 --> 00:15:43.120 And we're going to see she's got some engagements. 00:15:44.680 --> 00:15:47.240 She's got some situations in her life. 00:15:49.280 --> 00:15:51.500 But Jesus is not going to be like any Samaritan man. 00:15:52.660 --> 00:15:54.300 Jesus is not going to be like any Jewish man. 00:15:54.800 --> 00:16:00.200 With what Jesus is going to bring and what Jesus is going to offer are completely different. 00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:04.020 So for her, she's confused. 00:16:04.780 --> 00:16:06.960 What do you mean that this is what you're going to do? 00:16:07.140 --> 00:16:09.580 And she says, are you greater than our father Jacob? 00:16:10.520 --> 00:16:18.100 He gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock. 00:16:18.880 --> 00:16:19.940 So she's saying, well, hold up. 00:16:20.100 --> 00:16:26.380 You say that you're different, but there's no way that you are greater than Jacob. 00:16:27.480 --> 00:16:33.600 But Jesus says in verse 13, everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. 00:16:34.540 --> 00:16:39.560 But whoever drinks of the water I will give him will never be thirsty again. 00:16:39.560 --> 00:16:48.860 The water I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. 00:16:48.880 --> 00:16:55.760 And we begin to see this conflict of this dialogue that is existing between the two of them. 00:16:56.380 --> 00:16:57.840 Is it too good to be true? 00:16:57.940 --> 00:17:02.320 Well, for those of us who know the story, for those of us who understand the gospel, 00:17:02.520 --> 00:17:06.420 that's what we understand of what Jesus is talking
