Navigating Zero - Global Trade’s Powerful Wave of Change

A view that takes the needs of future generations into account is critical if we are to change our world for the better. But how can we push boundaries, and make different decisions today that benefit the lives of our children and grandchildren tomorrow?

In this episode, Sophie Howe, former Future Generations Commissioner for the Welsh Government, sits down with Lora Jakobsen, Chief Purpose Activist at ZeroNorth, to explore the transformative power of public policy and our collective responsibility to drive positive impact for the next generations.

In 2015, the Well-being of Future Generations Act was implemented in Wales, mandating that public entities consider the long-term consequences of their choices, collaborate more effectively with individuals, communities, and amongst themselves, and tackle enduring problems. In her unique role as commissioner, Sophie challenged policy and lawmakers to think differently about a wide array of issues, including poverty, health, and the environment.

In this conversation, Sophie and Lora discuss how impactful legislation can drive significant environmental change; Sophie specifically reflects on the blocking of a major road extension, something that was only possible because of the Future Generations Act. They also delve into the need for radical, long-term thinking.

Before her tenure as Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie served as a local councillor and as a special political advisor, and deputy police and crime commissioner in Wales. Currently, Sophie works as a freelance sustainability, futures, and wellbeing advisor.

The world is in a climate crisis, and all industries must do their part to reach zero emissions. Maritime trade is critical to today's society but is also responsible for roughly 3% of all greenhouse gases. A future where global trade reaches zero emissions is possible. But how do we actually get there? In this podcast, we're sitting down with thought leaders to explore the inner workings of global trade, its massive impact on our society, and the obstacles it faces while navigating its way to zero.
