The Big Idea

The memory palace is proof that extraordinary memory is mostly a skill, not a gift. By turning what we want to remember into vivid, exaggerated images and placing them along a route through a place we already know, an ordinary brain borrows the extraordinary power of its own sense of space. The technique is roughly 2,500 years old, formalized in Roman rhetoric, and it has survived contact with the laboratory: controlled studies confirm it works, and brain scanners show that the world's best memorizers have ordinary brains running a spatial strategy, not bigger brains or higher IQs. But the palace has an honest edge. It is spectacular for ordered lists of arbitrary things and largely silent on understanding. It can make you remember, but it cannot, by itself, make you comprehend. That is the very distinction the ancients drew between memory for words and memory for things, and it is the one this series keeps returning to. A full memory is not the same as a deep one.
