job there and I quickly found"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":110.85,"endTime":115.29,"body":"out that the structure of that company had an entire"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":115.29,"endTime":121.47,"body":"training department that involved quality assurance and also trainers and"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":121.47,"endTime":123.24,"body":"then also instructional designers."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":123.24,"endTime":126.51,"body":"And as a teacher, I had purchased curriculum for my"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":126.51,"endTime":131.22,"body":"classroom and I had visited with different representatives, sales representatives"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":131.43,"endTime":133.17,"body":"for different curriculum companies."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":133.32,"endTime":136.38,"body":"It never dawned on me that someone actually wrote this"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":136.38,"endTime":138.44,"body":"curriculum, and that was a career path."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":138.45,"endTime":141.54,"body":"That's how I discovered instructional design is after I had"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":141.54,"endTime":146.16,"body":"left teaching altogether and found that this was something that"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":146.16,"endTime":148.26,"body":"was very common in the corporate space."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":148.65,"endTime":153.42,"body":"So I made that transition and I absolutely loved it."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":154.05,"endTime":156.57,"body":"What advice would you give to somebody who wants to"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":156.57,"endTime":158.19,"body":"make that transition today?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":159.26,"endTime":163.43,"body":"If you are currently a teacher or you've already left"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":163.43,"endTime":167.09,"body":"the education sector and you want to break into corporate"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":167.09,"endTime":170.45,"body":"learning, whether it's as a trainer or as an instructional"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":170.45,"endTime":175.22,"body":"designer, my biggest piece of advice is learn the in instructional designs, we might talk"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":191.09,"endTime":195.5,"body":"about modules, we might talk about sections or themes or"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":195.5,"endTime":196.19,"body":"things like that."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":196.19,"endTime":201.62,"body":"So learning the language of corporate learning is huge."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":202.22,"endTime":204.71,"body":"How do you describe what you do if someone says,"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":204.71,"endTime":206.96,"body":"Hey, you're an instructional designer, what does that mean?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":207.56,"endTime":211.73,"body":"How I don't describe myself is as an instructional designer"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":211.73,"endTime":214.31,"body":"because people usually get hung up on the word designer, or sometimes something in like the UX designer,"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":224.18,"endTime":226.49,"body":"IT sort of space."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":226.82,"endTime":229.46,"body":"So I usually just say that I am in corporate"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":229.46,"endTime":235.37,"body":"training and that I spend my time either building or"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":235.37,"endTime":242.93,"body":"revising the existing curriculum or even facilitating courses and conducting"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":242.93,"endTime":243.62,"body":"the training."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":243.95,"endTime":246.41,"body":"And that flows into the next question, which is what"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":246.41,"endTime":247.7,"body":"are your typical tasks?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":248.87,"endTime":254.72,"body":"My typical tasks usually involve balancing several projects."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":254.75,"endTime":258.59,"body":"Some of the projects are curriculum complete, and I have"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":258.59,"endTime":261.95,"body":"to go in and do some revisions or some updates."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":262.34,"endTime":265.4,"body":"It might be part of our annual audit."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":265.4,"endTime":268.22,"body":"That's time to look at the material again and make"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":268.22,"endTime":270.62,"body":"sure that it is still current."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":271.31,"endTime":275.12,"body":"Or it might be some policy change or some legislation"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":275.12,"endTime":276.98,"body":"that is different that we have to make sure storyboarding and or using the storyboard"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":285.56,"endTime":290.6,"body":"to build another e-learning module, it might be working with"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":290.6,"endTime":295.52,"body":"trainers to make sure that the handoff between what my"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":295.52,"endTime":302.69,"body":"intention of the training material is, matches what they're going"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":302.69,"endTime":303.98,"body":"to do in the classroom."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":303.98,"endTime":306.32,"body":"If there is classroom the colors on brand, things like that."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":407.22,"endTime":411.57,"body":"Sometimes I'm looking for a way to put a graphic designers can help me make sure that"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":424.41,"endTime":425.91,"body":"there's a logical flow."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":425.91,"endTime":430.86,"body":"It's not crowded and it is esthetically pleasing at the"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":430.86,"endTime":431.52,"body":"same closed between me as the designer and them"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":472.5,"endTime":474.69,"body":"as the SME or them as the end that's"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":513.99,"endTime":516.12,"body":"going to make you different than everyone else."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":516.12,"endTime":518.64,"body":"And so what would you describe your niche to be?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":519.55,"endTime":523.719,"body":"I would say for me, I really like asynchronous different times and being able to monitor what"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":574.15,"endTime":577.9,"body":"is happening in there and even asking additional questions."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":578.35,"endTime":585.49,"body":"So everyone is really participating as a social learning platform"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":585.85,"endTime":590.65,"body":"is something that I really try and incorporate and that"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":590.65,"endTime":596.98,"body":"isn't super common throughout the instructional designer network that I"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":596.98,"endTime":597.37,"body":"have."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":598.09,"endTime":598.6,"body":"Yeah."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":598.6,"endTime":601.54,"body":"So my question for you on that one is what's"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":601.54,"endTime":602.84,"body":"your sort of critical mass?"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":602.86,"endTime":606.1,"body":"How many students are you looking at in order to"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":606.16,"endTime":609.52,"body":"do that any time and still be able to maintain"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":609.52,"endTime":610.54,"body":"that social presence?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":611.32,"endTime":614.56,"body":"It could be anywhere from five all the way up"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":614.56,"endTime":615.94,"body":"to 100."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":617.03,"endTime":620.81,"body":"So depending on what the nature of the content is"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":621.14,"endTime":623.84,"body":"right now, I'm in the space of doing a And in the leadership development space, a"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":628.52,"endTime":632.93,"body":"lot of these leaders are pulled in every single direction,"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":632.93,"endTime":635.96,"body":"so they don't necessarily have time to be in a"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":635.96,"endTime":639.23,"body":"class every day, all day for a week or two"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":639.23,"endTime":641.72,"body":"weeks or a month or whatever it is."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":641.99,"endTime":646.43,"body":"So that's what I'm thinking about with asynchronous learning is"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":647.06,"endTime":650.21,"body":"there have been a lot of studies done by Deloitte,"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":650.21,"endTime":653.99,"body":"by LinkedIn Learning, by Josh Berson and others in the"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":653.99,"endTime":658.76,"body":"last few years, saying that a lot of learners prefer"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":659.12,"endTime":663.17,"body":"in the modern workforce to do tasks in between their"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":663.17,"endTime":663.65,"body":"work."},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":663.8,"endTime":667.61,"body":"So this is a great base for not just spaced"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":667.61,"endTime":670.73,"body":"learning but also social learning as I can do this"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":670.73,"endTime":674.0,"body":"little task and then I can jump in and watch"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":674.0,"endTime":677.24,"body":"that two, three minute video and make a couple comments"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":677.24,"endTime":680.66,"body":"or ask a question and move on to the next"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":680.66,"endTime":684.5,"body":"thing and then get notifications that other people are chiming"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":684.5,"endTime":686.0,"body":"in on that same topic."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":686.27,"endTime":687.41,"body":"That sounds fascinating."},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":688.47,"endTime":690.63,"body":"What do you use for a learning management system for"},{"speaker":"REBECCA","startTime":690.63,"endTime":690.93,"body":"that?"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":691.65,"endTime":695.85,"body":"It doesn't really take a learning really depends on what does the company culture already"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":701.16,"endTime":702.36,"body":"has in system"},{"speaker":"RACHAEL","startTime":707.82,"endTime":711.78,"body":"like Microsoft Teams or Slack or something like that,
