Is Prime Day done? Welcome to the Know the Difference Minute for Wednesday, October 12th. Remember the Black Friday glory days? Long lines. Fistfights. Big money spent. Safe to say, it isn’t what it used to be. Is it also happening to Amazon’s Prime Day? At one point yesterday, sales for the Sequel event were about the same as the previous 30 days. 58% of items sold were under $20---far less than the typical $75 Amazon purchase. No social media buzz either, Twitter mentions down 70%. Consumers drive 70% of GDP but they’ve cut back because of inflation. Retail needs a solid holiday. One estimate has November and December spending rising only 2.5%—compared to 8.6% last year. The president said he doesn’t think there will be a recession and if so, it will be very slight.
