स्मरणार्हा राज्ञी वेलुनाचियारा

वेलुनाचियारा बाल्यकाले एव फ्रेञ्च्-आङ्ग्ल-उर्दुप्रभृतयः अनेकाः भाषाः पठिताः । तस्याः पतिः शिवगङ्गीयः मुतुवडुगनाथपेरियः शतकद्वयं यावत् शिवगङ्गायाः पालनं अकरोत् । १७७२ तमे वर्षे ईस्ट्-इण्डियासंस्थया यदा शिवगङ्गा स्वायत्तीकृता तस्मिन् युद्धे राजा अम्रियत । राज्ञी वेलुनाचियारा पुत्र्या साकं पलायनम् अकरोत् । आङ्ग्लेभ्यः शिवगङ्गां पुनः प्राप्तुं दृढनिश्चयं कृत्वा राज्ञी अष्ट वर्षाणि यावत् सन्नाहकार्यं कृतवती । सा मैसूरुराज्यस्य शासकेन हैदरालिना मिलित्वा तस्य साहाय्यं स्वीकृत्य १७८० तमे वर्षे आङ्ग्लान् विरुध्य युद्धम् अकरोत् । आङ्ग्लानां स्फोटकास्त्रप्रकोष्ठः नाशितः । स्फोटास्त्राभावेन अङ्ग्लाः पलायिताः । राज्ञी शिवगङ्गां प्रतिप्राप्नोत् ।

Velu Nachiyar, queen of Sivaganga, had studied many languages including French, English, and Urdu in her childhood. Her husband, Muthu Vaduganatha Periyavudaya Thevar, ruled Sivaganga for two decades. In 1772, when the East India Company seized Sivaganga, the king was killed and the queen fled with her daughter. Determined to reclaim her kingdom, Velu Nachiyar spent eight years preparing for war. She allied with Hyder Ali of Mysore and, in 1780, fought against the British. In the battle, the British ammunition depot was destroyed, forcing them to retreat. Velu Nachiyar thus regained Sivaganga.
