The elders' first response to Paul's report is worship. They glorify God. Then they name the problem. Tens of thousands of Jewish believers in Jerusalem are zealous for the law, and rumors have hardened Paul into a caricature: the apostle who tells Jewish believers to abandon Moses. That was never Paul's teaching. But the rumor arrived in Jerusalem before he did. So James and the elders propose a plan. There are four men finishing a Nazirite vow who can't afford the temple sacrifices. Pay for them. Undergo a brief purification ritual yourself. Show the city you still honor your heritage. This puts Paul in a hard spot. But Paul never confused the essentials of the gospel with the cultural expressions around it. He held the gospel with a closed fist and held everything else with an open hand. Mature believers have learned how to give up their right to be right.
