Referees are so crucial to football. Competitive matches
literally cannot happen without them. Yet, every single week, they are the biggest talking point in the game. The deal with abuse from players and fans during the game, and endless scrutiny afterwards, whether they make a mistake or not.
We’re all guilty of it; a football fan who says they’ve never criticised a referee is a liar. But how do you become a referee? Perhaps more importantly, WHY would you become one?
