Paul keeps telling his story. Notice the man he highlights. Ananias. A devout Jew, well-spoken of by all the Jews in Damascus. The crowd would have caught that immediately. The first person to lay hands on Saul of Tarsus and call him brother was a Torah-keeping Jewish man with a sterling reputation. Then Ananias delivers the commission. The God of our ancestors has appointed you. Same God. Same promise. Paul wants the crowd to hear that his calling didn't come from some new god. A lot of people are waiting for a Damascus Road moment. Lightning bolts. A booming voice. Meanwhile, God keeps sending us our own version of Ananias. The friend who texts at the right moment. The mentor who notices something we couldn't see. God almost never does His most important work in our lives without using somebody else's humble obedience. Then Paul names the line that always lands hard. I will send you far away to the Gentiles.
