100 Greatest Inventions

In this episode we assess the legacy of the signing of Magna Carta. Magna Carta was never supposed to be the foundation of English Liberty following the imposition of the Norman yoke, but rather the invention of the myth and legend developed around its signing. A treaty to allow the Barons of John's Plantagenet Empire to hold the King to account, Sir Edward Coke used its base to develop his theories of the rights of free-born Englishmen. We then see how Coke's invention developed into one of the foundations of Common Law across all corners of the British Empire.
