Welcome to episode #37! In this week's episode, Matt and Braden discuss three important questions in building self-awareness; when, where, and why we look at porn!
The When
Understanding the time that we are most susceptible to looking at porn is a key component in building good self-awareness. Usually, when an addiction like porn plagues us, we are far more reactive than proactive. Being reactive at the moment we are most prone to look at porn is not a recipe for freedom or success. We need to have good awareness ahead of time so that we can prepare ourselves and plan in a proactive way.
The Where
Porn use can have a consistent pattern that is always advancing or progressing in our lives to our detriment. We need to understand our preferences (i.e. place, preferred device, website) so that we can build a plan that moves us towards healing and freedom. If we don't grasp this, the behavior always expands to increase the level of stimulus - and it often happens without any awareness on our part. Knowing our preferences can help stop this and enables us to move towards being proactive.
The Why
Why we look at porn is a key question and it takes a degree of growing self-awareness to start to have some understanding. Those of us who have struggled with porn addiction often never get very far in asking this question because our comprehension is stunted at a surface level. We don't get that we have a connection problem, nor do we understand how to deal with life and emotions in a healthy way. Porn has become our escape and we don't usually give much thought as to why we need that escape or how to regulate ourselves in a constructive way. Asking "why" is an important step in moving towards victory.
