Promoted as modern financial exchanges rather than traditional gambling sites, these platforms have gained widespread popularity among young adults and teenagers. However, according to an urgent consumer protection report published by WGEM, gambling addiction specialists and state law enforcement officials are sounding alarms, warning that these gamified trading apps pose severe behavioral risks to young Missourians.

Addiction experts interviewed by WGEM explain that prediction markets utilize fast-paced, highly engaging interfaces that trigger the same neurochemical dopamine responses as traditional sports gambling and slot machines. Because these platforms often frame bets as "event contracts" or financial trades, young users frequently fail to recognize the inherent gambling risks involved. Furthermore, specialists point out that lax age verification mechanisms on certain platforms allow individuals under twenty-one to easily access high-risk wagering.

In direct response to growing public health concerns, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway issued formal cease-and-desist orders to six major prediction market companies—including Polymarket, Kalshi, Robinhood, Novig, Underdog, and Crypto.com. State prosecutors argue that repackaging sports bets as financial contracts directly violates state voter-approved sports wagering laws, which require strict licensing, taxation, and rigid age protections.
