Hezekiah becomes king and doesn't depart from following Yahweh. In his 14th year, Sennacherib conquers the fortified cities of Judah and Hezekiah offers submission. However, Sennacherib wants complete overthrow of Hezekiah's kingdom and besieges Jerusalem. One of his officers, Rabshekah gives a long, politically manipulative speech to encourage the people to abandon Hezekiah, which includes telling them there is no point in trusting Yahweh. No other god has been able to save people from the great king of Assyria. None of the people of Jerusalem answer this man, though Hezekiah's officers go report the distressing challenge.
